replacing PS line- e420/500

Can someone enlighten me how this is done?

There is an "S-shaped" line which is quite easy. The other one is under the heat shield. I do not see where the rear screw is that holds the heat shield on the firewall???
Dave suggested taking it off the steering gear- and then replace the hose. But I don't see how I'm suppose get that out either?? Is there a hole in the heat shield that I'm not seeing??

Ok,

I'll jack it up a bit and pull the exhaust off that side to see better. Got to get that pesky line done!

Any and all suggestions taken. I was hoping that the heat shield could be removed, then I could lock the steering gear straight and adjust my tie-rods to center the car( subtract from one side, add to the other). Would like to be able to adjust gear play just a bit- got all the steering links out right now.

To remove the heat shield just remove the engine first. Or alternatively do as Dave says - disconnect the adjacent line at the gearbox and take out both lines together, replace front hose, put them back together. You may have to remove the section of exhaust pipe to get at the gearbox - can't remember.

Thanks,

I feel the hole(s) for removal of the lines at the steering gear... If needed or not, that exhaust piece is coming out to make things easier. Will see if some of the pros pipe in and say otherwise. If they tell me how without..

Gives me an excuse to order some Wurth products=0). They make a nice assy paste for exhaust parts and I want some of their flange sealer for gaskets/ those pesky cam magnet leaks.

Honestly, It looks to me like that heat shield screw goes in from the back side-? Maybe down by the ps? Who knows what has to come out to get to it... can't seem to find a procedure in the manual that covers r&R that thing...
So, I'm not sure removal of the engine would provide access=))))

Michael,
This is not a job for a do-it-yourself guy... I saw the mechanic do this on my car and I told them just cut off the heat shield... and there was another problem.. The hose has 2 different diameters on each end... At the same time they put on a new filter and flushed the system....They charged me 2 1/2hrs for the job.. I think that was VERY fair...

That's odd about 2 different size ends. The factory EPC shows it as being the standard bulk hose. Now up by the pump, there is a little return hose "S-shaped" which is a molded curved hose.
It's been yucky weather outside or I'd have gone farther. No progress, but I'll pull the exhaust pipe off(hopefully easy) and with better (and more access) address the problem.
So far everything has been quite doable. Just ussually have to take something off to get at what you want.

Just did this a few weeks back.
Remove exhaust section to get to see steering box Easy.
Bend back heatshield and inspect, just to get a visual of the lines..
For me i removed hi and low side hoses, which you should consider since you are there/You will figure the rest from there.
So for me heat shield looked impossible but was not that bad. There is a small opening in heat shield to remove hoses. All in all sounds easy but takes a bunch of time. This was on a 1994 E-420...With both hoses in hand never did find where leak was.Think it was hi side hose
Good luck
Rich
