Checking timing on 86 190E 2.3-16V
I know the system controls the timing on these cars, but it would be nice to verify what it is doing. I have attempted to check it with a timing light, but I cannot see the index mark and timing marks on the balancer. Cannot see it from above or below or either side. There is too much stuff hanging off the front of the engine to allow visibility.
Has anyone ever done this, and if so, how did you manage it. The Haynes manual says it is difficult to do, but that is an understatement. It should be possible to check it with an oscilloscope but I don't have one handy. Help?? Tom Elerding |

It IS possible :-)
Tom,
It is indeed very difficult, but it can be done. You need to aim the timing light at the pointer through all the 'stuff.' The trick, at least for me, is to NOT look for the pointer in the same line as the timing light. The engine compartment should be in your garage or car port, not in sunlight. It also helps to have a bright timing light. |
