Check Engine Electronics message?
I was driving my 98 e320 4matic, and was low on gas headed to the gas station from out of town. two blocks from the station it began to run rough, one block from the station the check engine electronics came on... and it ran out of gas and died in the parking lot of the station. I rolled it to the gas pump and put some gas in it... assuming this would solve my problems...
it continued to run a bit rough, though better... but the check light remained, so i took it in to the dealership to be on the safe side- not wanting to do any further damage. they say i need new spark plugs and wires which could cost upwards of $900... though the car ran like a dream up until that unfortunate evening. could that be coincidence? or what? help me out here. and if it is plugs and/or wires (which should last a lot longer, right?) i can definitely buy and change them myself for much cheaper? thanks ap |

That is a tough call..doubt that the plugs & wires went bad due to low fuel level.
I'd start with a fuel filter. How long since the engine has had maintence.

The car was in the shop about 2 months ago for general service. I was told spark plugs could need replacing relatively soon but not required yet...
it's the same shop. On one hand I could believe them and replace the lot, or be suspicious and since it's unlikely that it's related just believe that they reviewed the last service info and are blaming those as the culprit. I'd still like to know what tripped the system to begin with. The error message has since gone off and it's driving fine apparently. |

Ashpeck, you don't mention the mileage on your car. The spark plugs should be replaced at 100,000 miles, or four years. Driving around with worn plugs is a great way to over-tax the secondary side of the ignition system (wires and coils). With that being said, I replace lots of ignition wires for rough idle complaints and CEL's, on cars that have had timely maintenance. In short, make sure your maintenance items are up-to-date first.
