Hello All
I am new and this is my first post. I wish to first to say it is nice to see so many people helping each other in this forum. I purchased a flawless "body and interior" 1987 420sel with a gas engine. First question I have is where can I get an owners manual for this car and a repair manual for the engine. I was driving the car home after just buying it from a private party and it quit while getting on an on ramp so at speed, It was hauled in to MBI in Portland OR. I was quoted $1500.00 per cylinder to repair the engine. After looking real hard I see that the timing chain guides gave out they did not roll between the chain and gears on the cams but balled up in pieces between the chain and head housing. I am a certified mechanic in gas and diesel engines but not for these cars. My business also is a machine shop. I have never worked on one of these but looks easy to me and I know I can do the job and right. I am planning on turning the engine to get the valves into the closed position for leak down testing, to help determine if there is bent valves. If that passes on all holes I am planning on replacing the chain and guides I seen on this site they offer plastic as well as heavy duty steel ones, which would be better the steel or plastic?? I feel I am looking at head repair or replacement. If the chain jumped a tooth does this mean destruction of the valves period, or has anybody been lucky with this method like I said I have never rebuilt this type of engine. I bought this as a gift for my wife and she loves the car so kinda stuck in fixing it, and before I pay $1500.00 per hole I'll junk it LOL. Any thoughts I would be grateful and any links on the repair owners manual. thank you. Robert please feel free to contact owenaero@hotmail.com or as a replay. need help engine quit update
here is a update to my dilemma.
I pulled the drivers side valve cover and 4 of the rocker arms come right out needless to say the intake valves are all bent the exhaust are all fine the passenger side head pressure tested ok on all the cylinders after removing the rocker arms I am still going to remove that head as well in order to reseal the top end of the engine. I find it hard to believe that the one head is only damaged on a zero clearance engine I conceder my self lucky. I am finding the passenger side exhaust manifold very difficult to remove as to getting to the rear lower bolts the drivers side was a pain but got it. but I could not remove the steel bellows at the rear for the cross over and I think I might of damaged it so I am looking for a replacement one now I also decided to remove the engine completely and reseal the engine and trans. this will also give me the opportunity to remove the front timing chain cover and replace all the chain guides I used my bore scope to look inside and do not trust the guides inside at all and want it right. can anybody tell me how to remove the steel exhaust bellows ? is there a special way to do it or a certain tool to use for this? I went on to a link that was posted for me to get info for this engine http://eautorepair.net/ and signed up for a year. but it is a little vague as to the timing settings for the cams. can anybody tell me if there is a cam shaft fixture tool that hold the cams in the right position wile installing the chain I have seen them on the net but says 1990 and up I bereave it is for the DOHC systems. I have a 1987 420sel with 4.2 SOHC any more help would be grateful and if a link to the tool for this or the part number I am in the process of purchasing tools from this site for doing the valve guides and the chain guide pin removal as well as others I plan when finished to add these tool to the rental program when I am finished. Thank you for any help provided on this. ![]()
