E420 1994 - Dies when revving over 2500rpm, MAF? [SOLVED]

Hi there folks. This is my first post over here and what would be greater then to start off with a problem i've been lurking around here for a while but decided to register yesterday.

I have an E420 1994 (w124) and my problem is as follows:
I cant rev the engine above 2500rpm with the MAF connected, it just cuts the ignition and dies if i push down the accelerator any further, i have to press it very gently to get it to 2500rpm. BUT If i disconnect the MAF i can push the pedal and rev the engine to redline without problems, and it will go pack to a smooth idle.

Ive looked down through the MAF and the hot wires are intact.

What the hell? anyone?

Best Regards from Sweden

Do you have the 38 pin diagnostic connector in Sweden? If so the first step would be to build the fault code reader and read the fault codes.

You should have the pushbutton LED set up. Press the button for a count of 3 and count how many times the LED blinks.

Are there any other symptoms? Richness? Sputtering?

Menu item 2, bottom of the page. This is for OBDI, through 1995 model year, but an 88 300SE may be too early. A CA version might have something, probably on an eight pin connector, not sure.

I will have to go to the garage and check that out right ahead. If i got the LED set up, i wont have to build the $20 tool?

There are no other symptoms, the ASR lamp does not light up, and i do not have a check engine light.

38 pin connectors don't have the built in LED but sometimes have an ancillary LED, either on by themselves or on an extra 8 pin connectors. In any case the LED reads on the DM / diagnostic module codes. To read the other modules you need to build the code reader. I think it's more like $10, or even less, at least in the U.S., not sure about Sweden. If you have ASR fault codes should be the same as on JimF's site, again at least in the U.S.

Alright, i've checked under the hood and there's no LED thingy in there. I live next door to the mercedes dealer, i will talk to them maybe tomorrow and see what they charge to read out the codes. But it seems like everything points to the MAF. I think i'll try to clean it tomorrow with the CRC maf cleaner as the wires is intact before i go to the dealer.

Best regards.

Must be a pretty early 94, not to have the LED and button. btw, it is under a little rectagular black plastic cover, infront of the module box.

Post Problem Solved!

Today it was delivery date of my "new" MAF. Went off and grabed it, went to my garage and mounted it on the car.

And guess what, (yea, you already know it by now) engine respons is MUCH better, no missfires AT ALL and with the pedal to the floor it revs to redline faster than ever before. The car now runs better than it have ever done.
Thanks to mercedesshop.com I've saved $700! (A new MAF to my car in Sweden is $1000).

I think i have to go cruising tonight

Edit: I forgot to wrote, I cleaned the MAF with CRC MAF Cleaner before mounting it.
