Just thought I'd say hello.

My 'new' 300E is great and has also brought me into the modern era of Mercedes. I somewhat guiltily admit that it is the best to drive, although the old ones just have their own character that can't be beat for relaxed motoring.

I almost would like to move so my commute involves more 5th gear driving! :p

S 280 (W140) 5-SPEED MANUAL

What about an S 280 (W140) with a five-speed MANUAL transmission for your poll?

See the manual stickshift in front of the open ashtray on the center console plus the clutch pedal on the footwell.

Also check out the standard CLOTH (not leather) seat upholstery on the MANUALLY adjustable (not powered) front seats!

Here you have ACTUAL proof:

1986 300E 5 speed

I have a 1986 300E with five speed manual transmission, cabernet red paint (587) with palomino mbtex interior (174). I am the second owner, purchased from MB dealer in Princeton, NJ on 2-27-90. Currently has 121,000 miles and in near concours condition. Never experienced any major problems. I have been in love with this car since day one. Just had ac overhauled but not converted. Wish there was a registry for '86 and '88 300E five speed owners.

Bernard provided all parts I asked for, some I didn't and others found to be needed 2 months after first shipment. I would purchase again from him in a heartbeat. I received transmission, shifter, console wood, flywheel, clutch, prresure plate, release and throw-out bearings, linkages (and retainers), pedal assy., clutch master and slave cylinders plus lines, complete driveshaft, crossmember, rubber grommets, etc. If anyone is interested in details, let me know.
I'm interested, can you PM me with the details ?

I have a 1988 300TE wagon, C36-powered of course.

I have a couple of 240D, 5 speed manuals. The brown one is a Euro car, bumpers, headlights and all. I swaped out the entire interior, (except the headliner) as the cloth seats were a light color and did'nt have the outboard panels made of MB tex. also the dash was cracked.
The blue 240 has a 5 spd from a car I bought, fixed up, swaped trannies, and sold. Well worth the effort

On my 87 300E, the hole in the console wood around the shifter assy was a different size than for the automatic box. Typical DB. Same for teh exhaust hanger bracket that bolts to the trans.

Neil.. You really need a donor car nearby for all the bits and pieces. Do a search here and you will find a huge amount of information on this, most true but some not. If you have a specific concern, let me know and I'll do my best to answer it.

Talking five speed roll call

My 1985 190D is going strong with 5-speed and the mini-motor. Has 572K miles. Clutch was replaced @ 292K miles, no tranny repairs that I know of.
I do change tranny fluid at 25K intervals.

Al,

I admire your extreme maintenance measures. I am known on here as an extremist maniac when it comes to engine oil changes and many people tell me that I change it too often, but I have to tell you that changing lubricant in a manual transmission every 25K is EXTREME OVERKILL.

I have one manual transmission car that has gone 533,000 miles with about 4 trans lube changes.

Oil in a transmission lives a very easy life as opposed to an engine where combustion is putting nasty contaminants in the oil constantly.

100,000 mile oil changes in a manual transmission are more than adequate.

Have a great day,
