Exclamation W202 C220 Catalytic converter question

Hey guys, my cat's been rattling lately. I took a look under-neath my car and noticed the car has 2 Catalytic converter's. I was wondering if its possible to replace both Catalytic converter's with one? and if there are any after market cheap solutions out there? I want to know what you guys recommend, i want some what of a proper job done, but i'm not thrilled about spending big money on my car either.... let me know guys!

thanks

I don't think you can replace the 2 with 1. But there are cheaper aftermarket cats available. I am guessing around 350 USD. Just make sure you don't get CATCO. They look they were welded by Grandma Moses after she went blind. But there are other brands out there.

There was a guy who did the 2 to 1 conversion on club202.com and posted pictures within the last few weeks. Go there and use the search button to find the post. Don't post without doing a search first or you may get abused.

Cheapest way to go is with a universal converter. Have seen some from Magnaflow
that fit C220s for under $70, but can't vouch for how good they are.
Are you sure you failed emissions because of the converter? MB
OEM converters last a long time.

He stated it was rattling, which usually means the matrix has come loose or even broken. It won't work properly in that condition, and can even obstruct airflow through the exhaust which can do all sorts of neat things.

I would go with a generic - I have seen the $70 part but wouldn't recommend it. Still, I'm sure you can find a muffler shop that will weld on an aftermarket which is way less expensive than OEM.

You don't want to go anywhere near a dealer. IIRC, the OE cats in Canada are about $1K each plus a bunch of labour at $110.hr to install.

Try some exhaust shops and maybe an MB indie for a referral...

Yea the MB Canada price is stupid. They want 2000 for a overhaul of both cats since the part comes as a one piece header back or something and labor on top of that. Just so stupid of an attempt to rip us loyal Mercedes Owners off.

Would you really want a used cat? No telling how much life it has left. I would just go brand new aftermarket and be done with it.

Yes the thought has crossed my mind. But I was wondering are the exhausts the same on all the W202's? like will the W202 C230 and C280 exhaust fit interchangeably? Since the OEM ones lasts way longer then after market ones, I wouldn't mind getting one from a wrecker with low k's.

Since my car failed both HC and NOX, I wonder if replacing the cats alone will solve the problem?

let me know, thanks

Low km's could be a problem. Short trips kill exhausts. Don't pay a premium at a wrecker for a "low km" exhaust.
