I am a happy owner of a 1996 C280 with 194,000 miles and going strong but I am thinking about purchasing a 2000 CLK430 as a weekend/sunny day/backup car. Before heading into a purchase are there common problems I should be looking for with the CLK class? I know the V8 is known to run warm in the engine bay and I wonder if that causes problems over time? Most of the 1999 - 2001 CLK's are around 80,000 miles. Any pointers would be helpful.
Thanks, Brad

The engine is pretty reliable and really doesn't have an overheat issue in the engine bay (my 95 500 SL was another story)...
You may get the BAS/ESP fault code...the brake light switch is at fault here. If you are looking for a cabriolet, expect top operation problems to be the REAL plague. Usually expensive issues, especially out of warranty! Just got mine back ($2100) for a failed motor. It was attached to the hydraulic pump, and you had to buy as a whole unit ($1200)! Consider an extended warranty if you chose to get a cabriolet!

Depending on how the former owner drove, the 430's sporty wheels can be bent. Tie rod ends/ball joints etc. on the front suspension can be worn too at that mileage; again, depending on how it was driven. Of course, you can test drive it to see if there are any vibrations from the suspension, check tires for any unusual wear patterns, and check for excessive wheel play, etc.
Check the power windows, seats, and sunroof for proper operation. Check the front spoiler to see if it has been broken. It's very low, and catches on curbs easily. |

Considering the replacement cost, most won't bother unless the insurance company is replacing it due to an accident...
