Ignition switch dust

I notice tiny metallic flakes on the trim below the ignition switch, and I'm wondering if thats how the switches eventually fail. Do you recommend squirting some graphite in to minimize wear?

The flakes are most likely from the key. Mine failed on the front diecast piece. I don't know if any lube would have extended its life. I don't hink a little bit of dry lube would hurt, though.
