Wet Floor in W126

I posted this over on the diesel forum, but had no responses, so lets try it here.
Car is a 1982 300SD. After a rain event I have a wet carpet in the driver's footwell. The carpet-covered knee bolster is also wet on its back side. I have read about these issues in a W123, but what about a W126?
I removed the plactic cowl screen from the base of the windshield on the driver's side. The only thing there is a ( suppoosed) drain tube to the fender area. The floor of the cowl is clean, with no rust at all.
Is it possible that water is coming in thru something in the center section of the cowl area, under the W/S/W motor and transmission?
Where else can the water be getting into the car?

Secondly--How Do I fix it?

Thanks

unless you have checked it sounds like a typical windshield leak.the windshield was prob replaced and rtv was used instead of eurothane and after a couple yrs the rtv shrinks and you see the result.
