New shocks Bouncy ride 1988 300TE

Just replaced the rear shocks on my 300TE (hydromatic) and the ride is now quite bouncy to start. I went for a long drive yesterday and it seemd to get less bouncy the longer it ran. Maybe I was just getting used to it. Could this be a matter of a faulty pump or a bad accumulator/sphere? Is there a way to determine if the spheres are bad other than the ride? Could it be some other scenario entirely?

Thanks in advance for any info.
