How rare are w-140's s600's??

I asked the question on another section on this site, but I was wondering how rare are the w-140 s class 600's?? Primarily the 92 s-600's

I was really curious about this. Any info would be great.

I imported a few hundred a year. So rare enough that they are not on every corner.

Im not good with import and export but a few hundred sounds very few, when they make what like 20,000 + cars ( a certain maker) a year? So would these be consider real rare, or just somewhat rare? I want to find out especially about the year 1992, when they had the 408 horsepower which supposedly only this year did of those w-140's?

Thumbs up

Why in the world would you want a first year W140???

I have seen my fair share of S600s (the '92-3 is the 600SEL) and one of those I believe was an SEL. If you think of trying to get one on the cheap, start doing your homework on how expensive the 140 is to maintain then add all the extra bits the 600s have...

I consider any S600 quite rare, it was nearly $150k when new. Even nice '97-99 ones are $25k or less now.

^^^ Actually I bought one about 2 months ago, a good amount of service records, 140,000 miles on it, near perfect condition. And the few minor things ( trans fliud change, bose amp going out, brake light sensor, and cigarette lighter out) have all been fixed. So hopefully staying on top of it like I have been will help me out.

I was just wondering since when I actually looked for s 600's in the 92-95 era they were very rare. But I have yet to find a link or something that explains a little more about how rare they really are.

Very rare...at least for the coupes.

The M120 engine that poweres that beast was the ONLY hand built MB engine of that era!

Have seen some for less than $10K. & they weren't worth that much.

I guess it was a bad "BOSE' after all, not speakers!

They are rare enough that it is going to cost an arm and a leg if anything major needs to be repaired.

Mercedes-Benz Production Models Book-

says that in 1992, 835 600SE models were built and 7497 600SEL models were built. A 600SEL sold for 127,800 in the US. Cars were built with model years 1990-4.

Nothing, no resale. By GM standard real rare, by MB standards not really.

'92s have the typical wiring harness issue, but the early car have DUAL computers I recall and DUAL harnesses. If those take a crap. $$$$$

Evap installs. Everything on the 92s can go bad.

7500 isn't a huge number, my '87 SDL is more rare but I see plenty more SDLs about than I do 600s.

$127,800 + taxes.

Early S 600s had the 400+ hp engine which was later reduced in power to comply with new European emissions limits. Any good tech can reprogram the computer on later limited hp models to regain their original spec.

Early production W140s (first three years) are a nightmare.

Later production W140s (last three years) are a dream come true (even though they still had a few faults).

Correct me if I'm wrong but in 92 they only made around 7,500 sel 600's? Is that number worldwide or just for the u.s? If so how does that compare to other mercedes around that time? Maybe just an s class?

Yes, that is total production of the 600SEL for that year.

Book says 11,537 300E's built in 1992 along with 2884 of the same model with optional 24-valve engine. There were 9715 260E models built which was called 320E 2.6 in the U.S. 29, 361 190E's were built.
