Exclamation How to reprogram key??

1996 SL500 my remote does not work to lock/unlock my doors anymore, although I can see the alarm red/green leds flash on/off. My indie tells me the remote needs to be reprogrammed and has to go to the dealer.

Is it possible for me (or my indie) to reprogram the key? Thanks guys!

Making sure the batteries are good is the 1st step.
Then getting into the car, shutting the door, pointing the remote at the mirror, pressing the button on the key twice, inserting the key into the ignition, turning the key to position 2 & then off, removing the key, pointing the key at the mirror again, & then pressing the button on the key.

That is the ONLY programming of the key..synchronizing is a better description.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to think it's not the syncing. When I press the remote button I can see the alarm leds going on and off, but no locking. I am assuming if my remote was not synced/programmed correctly the alarm would not toggle on/off either?

Could it be some kind of locking module connected to the remote function?

A functioning key battery is needed to trigger the door locks. Did you replace it?

Would a non functioning key battery allow the remote to turn on/off the alarm?

The battery is needed to operate the locks, the ign and security communications are transmitted via transponders.

So that would explain why I can start the engine and turn the alarm on/off but not unlock the car with the remote.

Where can I get a new battery?

Excellent, thank you VERY much. I'll give it a shot tommorrow. I did call the dealer and told them what was going on and the tech told me the if the remote turns the alarm on/off but doesnt lock the car that its not an issue with the remote, but with the central locking system. I hope he's wrong!
