AC making me Hot under Collar
Hi All:
I brought my 1996 300E in becuase the AC was blowing cold on the passenger side and hot on the driverside. The first thing that was done was a recharge of the system then we had to Fan Assembly unit. All seemed well to me but my technichia said it was reading a code for the Throttle Position Control (which was replaced) and then replaced a ETR switch. Now I have lost a ton of power and the AC will only work when I get up to about 30 miles per hour. When stoped or driving slowly the car blows hot air. ![]() Any ideas? Thanks. Matt |

A/c problems
Oooh, that one is a bummer. I'm trying to get enough people to contact MB to coerce them to come up with a reasonable cost-effective solution to their chronic a/c problems, the ones that everyone but them knows about. Call them, they'll deny knowing anything about it (oooh, this is the first we've heard of a problem), then they'll blame the problem on you (well, have you taken it to a certified MB dealership for regular maintenence)?
The fact remains, their a/c's suck wind. All that said, and trust me, I'm no mechanic, sounds like the one half is getting a/c, while the other half is not getting heat per se, but maybe standard outside air that SEEMS hot, in comparison to the a/c coming out of the other vents? I dunno. If it works only above 30 mph? Well, I'll share my story. My a/c worked intermittently. Sometimes it'd work for an entire trip, other times it would blow cold for about the first 20 seconds, just enough to back out of the driveway, then that was it. I took it to a shop, they replaced some switch thing that got it working more, but the kicker is, my idler pulley was a crooked. They said if the belt slips even just a tiiiiiiny bit, it'll cut the compressor off. He said that's another reason why the belly pan is important on the car; keeps rain off the electrical parts. They told me to get a new idler pulley, damner, tensioner and serpentine belt while I was at it, and it might fix the problem. If not, then we'd have to diagnose further. I got the parts, couldn't figure out how to do the job, took it to a lesser priced, good, general, one-man-show mechanic in a lower rent section of town, and he put the parts in, didn't balk that he didn't sell them to me, and the damn a/c worked!! Have had no problems since ![]() ![]() From previous posts I learned to be careful if you add freon, there's supposed to be some kind of an oil added along with the freon. Without that oil, the compressor ends up locking up later down the road. Good luck, and I hope I've helped! 1991 300d, 90k |

Mine was cutting out when I accelerated harder than normal and it was warm are at slow speed or stopped and I corrected it by have the belt tension adjusted. Aparently the MB AC compressor is rigged to cut off when the belt slips.
