W124 AC. Replaced evaporator now condensor leaks. My fault?

Hello,

I had leak in my evaporator and I replaced it and charged the system myself. Prior to charging I pulled vacuum on the system but I did not flush it and remove the oil. I put in a full charge of oil and refrigerant so I think it was over charged with oil because it did not blow too cold. Could that cause an condenser leak? What does oil overcharging do? I checked the high side after charging and it was around 250. If it is overcharged with oil will I see a high pressure?

Thanks for your help,
Jay

Explain the condensor leak a little more (you didn't say much about it). How do you know it is leaking? I don't think an excess of oil in the system can cause this.

Having too much oil in the system will definitely result in reduced efficiency but more importantly it can also kill the compressor. It is better to have slightly less oil than too much.

Your high side pressure seems fine for R12. If the system has been converted to R134a the pressure is too low. Charging by weight (rather than by pressures) is preferable and would be convenient for you since you were starting with an "empty" system.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that about the compressor. I certainly don't want to wreck it. The system is 134a. I charged it by weight. The tag on the car says 2.2 pounds. I can see the die and the oil dripping all over the botom of the condenser. It wasn't there before.

Can to much oil create a lot of pressure? How does it hurt the compressor?

Exactly how many oz. of R134a did you put in there? It is possible for a weak spot in the condensor to blow if you overcharge and the high side pressure goes too high. I would tend to think that the binary switch, which for your car is calibrated to cut the compressor at around 435, would do so long before the condensor blows. But then again, depending on where you live or just the age of the condensor, there could be some pretty weak spots that would blow long before 435 is ever reached.

My A/C capacity guide lists 35 oz. of R12 for your car. which does in fact break down to 2.18 pounds. Calculating 80% charge for R134a, you should have put in 28 oz. or about 2 1/3 cans (if they are 12 oz. cans). So either way, 2.2 cans of R134a would be sufficient, and maybe just 1 oz. of oil to replace what was lost in the evap. There should be no more than 7 to 8 oz. of oil total in your system.
