Gasoline smell 94 E420

Hello Folks!

Checking 162 posts with keywords "gasoline smell" only let me know that alot of 126's need to check their EHA's more often. But I digress....

About a month or so ago, the Mass Air Meter was replace. Several days ago, a strong raw gasoline smell was present outside while parked after driving, and inside while driving.

I looked with a spotlight (engine running) to see if I could spot any wet spots, but nothing stood out.
Where could this leak be coming from?

Thanks!

-Larry

As a 1st step you might want to double check your gas cap for tightness. You may also want to double check the rubber hoses for the evaporative emission system under the hood for a tight fit. One other thought, look under the hood on the inside of the left front fender, locate a nipple which protrudes towards the engine, some times the hose falls off.

First you should postulate whether the smell is coming from a) under the hood, or b) near the gas tank. It should be stronger at one end of the car or the other. If it's coming from the rear it's probably a bad rubber fuel hose, a fairly common problem and a fairly easy fix.

A valid point, are the odors stronger from under the hood or from the rear of the vehicle?

Gasoline odor is definitely coming from under the hood (bonnet) and not from the rear of the car.

I thought I looked at the injectors fairly well (while motor was running), but will have a look again.

Please continue posting your ideas/thoughts.

ooops

Ok....I've got egg on my face!

I have a leak by the fuel pump. (not sure how it managed to get to the front - I was sure that the engine fan was blowing the scent at me)

Anyway... of course, my re-chargeable bazillion candlepower light goes dim just as I have the cladding removed.
There is a hose (with at least one crimped steel pipe & fitting) that is quite wet - so naturally, I suspect it to be bad.

I'm going to see if I can find someplace that has a diagram that shows the routing, so I know what this hose goes to - Unless someone here knows for sure...I am guessing it has some sort of compression end, and it gets bolted onto the one of the filter.

UPDATE: It is indeed the hose that goes from the filter to the front of the car....almost more of a mini slit, than a pinhole. Well...at least the hose isn't an arm and a leg....heck..it's not even an arm! ($30)

Gasoline leak...

Larry, I had the same problem with my E420 . Next to your fuel pumps are some fuel line that may have begun to leak do to age. I had a pin hole leak in one of my fuel lines and it took me a while to realize it. You can find the leak easily by removing the plastic cover and gaining access to fuel pumps. Then you would need to turning your ignition key to the on position until you dash light illuminate as if you are checking the codes. The fuel pumps should build up pressure in the fuel lines and hold it. Reach up next to the fuel pumps and wiggle the fuel lines and you should recognize which fuel line is leaking. The hose I had to replace was the line traveling from the fuel pumps to steel/alumin fuel line that was attack to the fuel injectors rail.

MB part# 00082010498F30

I think that is the correct MB part# however the $tealer$hip reciept I have does not have the description to clear. I hope this help because in the long run I was disappointed that I was losing my fuel over night as my car was parked in the garage. $3.05 a gallon for 93 oct. fuel really sucks.....
