1994 c220/fuel sender problem?

I have been having trouble with my car running out of gas. I am traveling from Houston to Nevada and have run out of gas 4 times with the guage showing 1/3 or less than 1/2 tank. The dealer in San Antonio replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor and sent me on my way. The dealer in New Mexico coould not identify a problem because I drove it in. A mechanic in Clovis NM (after having it towed in) added gas and sent me on my way. I kept the fuel gauge above 1/2 tank and made my way to Boulder Dam. Because of the grade slope around the dam, the car was pitched forward for several minutes with slow traffic and the car died. I added 5 gallons of gas and the tank registered full and it started up and ran fine into Las Vegas. I am wondering if the tank is bad or sending unit. The two dealers and one independent garage have checked fuel pressure, pumps, relays, and filter and all check out good. I am told that the tank design requires two sending units and the car is good till the second half of the tank is required and the unit on that side is failing? any ideas I am trying to return to my home in Houston soon. thanks, ray

those sending units are notorious for failing and making the gas gauge read incorrectly. Also, the small "o" rings can fail and effect the syphon of fuel from side to side. A new set of fuel level sensors (actually only one level sensor/pressure sensnor, and one syphon) should get you rolling again. It's less than a two hour job to do.

If your car still have the same mileage/gallon, you have nothing to worry about getting home? Just check the distance you drive instead of the tank meter and fill a little early to be on the safe side....

Otherwise you may have some debris in the tank blocking the supply?

c220 fuel sender

are you saying that if I do not have any variation with the mileage and the fuel indicator that I may have trash in my tank? I know that I can generally get at least 400 miles from a tank of fuel on the highway (15.5-16. gal tank).

I watch my mileage closely when traveling long distances and this trip was so much of a concern that I made sure that I filled up after every 300 miles or to about 1/3 empty. I have owned the car for 10 years and at times ran it down till the low fuel light came on, but not on the highway across Texas, NM, AZ and NV. On this trip, the mileage and the fuel indicator were right on for miles traveled and fuel used... but somewhere about 1/3 left in the tank, the car would run out of fuel. And it took 4 instances of running out to create a pattern for me to realize that the tank may be the issue.

thanks, ray
