The USA dealers are supposed to be using M1 0W40 in all cars. I've checked with my local dealers and that's all they offer.

Everyone knows the Euro oil mfrs offer MBz specific products, right? It really eliminates the "guess work".

My local dealer uses 0w40 in the gas cars and Delvac in the diesels. MB dealers are Mobil dealers in my area so thats all they offer. You can ask for any oil you want, but you get Mobil 1 0w40.

quaker state FCI branded 15W40 is the only oil for this car my indy mechanic recommends based on him telling me that's what the mercedes dealerships use....however i use castrol 15W40 and oddly enough, while oil is oil, my car starts up smoother in the mornings when the oil gets a little older compared to Q.S...also it warms up and gets out of higher idle faster...but that concerns me aswell, perhaps castrol doesn't handle heat aswell and casues the faster warm up? I'm surprised for all the money that goes into research and consumer protection by for profit private companies that there's no real indepth engine oil analysis in regards to all the different brands out there.
then again, Shell motor oil, quaker state oil, penzoil ....they're all the same company..... |

People put way too much thought into oil. Its designed to lubricate the engine. The claims that engines run smoother or have more power are mostly the placebo effect. I always find it amusing when people pay more money for the "high mileage" or "SUV Minivan" oils which are the same formulation as the standard oil. Marketing is such an amusing thing.

That said, would you use Pep Boys or Autozones house brand? If you look on the back of the bottles, the oil meets the latest and greatest ratings. Just a thought....it is tough to get past some marketing and branding. I usually use whatever is on sale, but i always do changes at 3k for dino and 5k for synthetic. That's been pounded in my head. Others here will tell you that you can double those mileages and be ok

I've been using Super Tech dino 20W50 from Wal Mart for years in all my high-mileage cars, changed around 5K miles. It used to be 79cents a quart, has gone up now but is still around a buck or more cheaper per quart than the other so-called "better" oils. Meets the latest & greatest ratings, so I don't see what the advantage is with the other oils, other than marketing.
I will periodically run DELO 15W40 (also available at Wal Mart) as a gentle flush, due to the excellent detergent properties. Believe me, it works. I've had a couple engines start slowly seeping oil after running DELO in them, which tells me the detergent is actually doing something. Point is, as long as the oil meets the ratings and viscosities recommended in the manual, it doesn't matter if you are running Quaker State or Joe Schmoe brand oil. Of course, as an engine ages and the journal and bearing tolerances increase due to wear, I like to run a "thicker" oil like 20W50, regardless of what the manual says (especially here in TX). Now the filter, that is another story. I will only use a filter from the dealer with a hologram on it. I have experienced reduced pressures at the oil gauge when using a Fram from AutoZone.

Mobil 1 is in the book and easy to obtain so on sale or not its whats used in my car. My 1999 S320 requires oil changes at 13K miles. I think I trust Mercedes more than I trust someone who derrives their livelyhood by selling oil changes. |

Local NAPA parts place sells their house brand for $1.49 qt.
Back of bottle says "Ashland Oil Co" - another word for Valvoline.

I trust Blackstone or Mobil's labs more then MB. I'd love to see a 13k mile sample out of that M104, I wonder what the lab would say.

Napa filters
I have bought a high end NAPA W202 filter once from Napa Auto parts. The filter had steel contrsuction, good filter, and a cloth looking wrapper and after 6000kms, the filter still looked like it wuz in great shape. Maybe you should give one of those filters a try? Apparently this is supposed to be the best filters on the market, and I use the mercedes ones also, and it did seem to be higher quality then the stock filter. But I still use the stock ones because of price...$13CND versus 22CND.
