M117, what are all the symptoms of leaking injector seals?
Would there be any loss in compression, discoloured/sooty plugs?

I would imagine that it would be difficult to start the 1st time because the fuel leaked out of the injectors with a normal 2nd start once the injectors have fuel in them again.

You mean the seals around the injectors?
Basically, you'd have a vacuum leak. So, rough/high idle, lean mixture.

What is the likely culprit if my number 1 plug is black and sooty?

Is it oily and carbon caked? If so, probably valve stem seals or valve guides letting oil through. If just sooty, it means rich mixture so could be a dirty injector that doesn't stop the fuel flow.
