R129 - Removal of bulb surrounding the rotary light switch
Hi all holder
'93 SL500 I'm currently going through the process of replacing all IC and dash bulbs but there's one that I can't work out how to remove - it's the the bulb/holder that provides illumination for the rotary light switch panel. I've watch the dash removal video that seems to indicate the lamp magically pops out - not in my case! I've pulled the panel out so have a clear view of the bulb but there's no clues...see here..Removal of ACC control panel? Fitting new lamps? Any tips much appreciated. Lea

Hello LeaUK,
You have to pull off the rotary button. On my '90 W124, I needed pliers and a protecting cloth to pull it off. It is fairly common after 12/15 years they feel like stucked in place. Be shure to replace by the right bulb : of the same 2 watt bulbs, my Benz has at least 3 different types. Clear bulb foot, grey or white. If mixed up, you will have almost no light or light where you have never seen it before...! Danny |

HI Danny
Thanks for the tips. If you take a look at the link I posted you'll see my panel is completely disassembled so I've removed the knob and panel and can see the bulb holder. Upon my last visit to MB I asked for advice and they mentioned it simply pulls out - I'm concerned but there doesn't e seem to be any other choice. Cross post on the SL forum with more info.. Removal of ACC control panel? Fitting new lamps? Cheers Lea

Hi Lea,
Indeed, it "simply" pulls out. But maybe the heat of the bulb has melted the bulbholder (certainly if the wrong bulb - more than 2 watt - was put in). So it will be glued! If I remember it well, I read somewere on this forum that someone broke the bulb attempting to pull it out. He "superglued" a small stick into the lampbase to enable the removal. BTW it's cold overhere : about 32° F. Therefore I don't touch anything made of plastic during winter. It becomes by age and the low temp so brittle that breaks to easy. And my Bene is always outside. Last monday (5th of december) it past the 400 000 kilometers and the 333 333 miles... Good luck! Danny |

I don't think it's melted as the holder is quite loose within the panel. Tomorrow I need to resolve it once and for all as it's rather annoying and I can't locate the correct bulb on any of my R129 data sources.
Cheers Lea

Today I noticed the plastic tip on the rear of the holder, something that shouts at you 'pull me to remove'. Yep pulling hard resolved it. Cheers
