Yeah, I heard they do good work. However, there are two other independent shops locally that also work on Mercedes only, so I am going to get an estimate from them as well.

Funny thing. I was talking to someone that has owned nothing but Mercedes for years and they said as long as there was no chain "noise", then there was no cause for concerns. I mentioned that it was the tensioners that often broke, but still seemed to stick to "no noise, no problem" suggestion.

I think for $400-$550, I should go ahead and have it changed since there is doubt of when/if it was last changed. I mean at 263K, if it is original, could be on the breaking points.

Thanks again!

Reread post #47.

Also ask your friend to interview thousands of people who drive cars with TIMING BELTS. Have him ask them what they heard just before the car lost all power. They heard nothing. The same goes for timing chains.

Just did my 1994 wagon 220,000 miles , it had 12 degrees of stretch, pulls much better now low to high rpm , smoother, ive always done 560 motors at 100 to 150k miles, there usually stretched 6-8 degrees, never done a 103, had a diesel 603 that was half broken, the link cut a hole into the valve cover like a chain saw , engine had about 180k miles, the diesel 642 last only to 150 max with 20 25 degrees stretch, 4 cylinder turbo engines 271 only good for 80-130 k miles, the 274 turbo engines need chains at about 78k miles and like to jump timing unsure why

Timing chain `1990 420sel

I was told by a MB club owner, member, Timing chains on early V8 should be changed every 100,000, however to check if the adjuster has been changed, take off the passenger side valve cover, you will see a hole in the head directly above the chain adjuster, run your finger through the oil on top of the adjuster, if the surface of the adjuster is a dirty brown its an original, if its white, its been changed. mine was white have 172 000 its starts in the winter at 10 below 0, hardly touch the key and all other times, the chain does not make a noise, a quiet motor and fast. most reliable car i have ever owned, 10 years this month.
