One more Auxiliary fan 300E problem
I've followed most threads/problems in the forums for auxiliary electric
fan problems, but haven't seen my particular situation addressed, so.... 1. My fan works. It runs at temps above (dash gauge) 100C. 2. But, when I turn the key off, the fan stops, even though the engine is still very hot. (And the A/C, lights, everything is OFF.) We had a little Ford car years ago; the fan would stay on until the engine cooled, regardless of the column switch position. What is the logic for the fan to come on? Low and high speeds, temps, A/C. A/C temp, etc. Where can I get a real schematic on the 300E? Thanks! |

It might help you get more information if you'd tell folks what year, engine, and model you're talking about. Since I do not yet have that information, I'll tell you what mine does. By design, the aux fan will shut off when the engine is turned off. The aux fan starts at low speed when the A/C reaches a certain pressure. The aux fan will run full-speed when the engine coolant temperature reaches a certain point. Without looking it up, I seem to recall 105C being in the neighborhood.
You can find some repair information online at http://mb.braingears.com/ and other similar sites, but I'd suggest you obtain the factory service manuals on CD or DVD if you're serious about understanding your car. EDIT, I see the model as 300E, but details would still be useful.

Some last thoughts
OK, Ill figure out how to add a signature for me on the pedigree of our
white old car. It's a M103 6cyl engine, on a 124.030 body, 1989 vintage. Regarding the fan, I see the logic of not having it run, EXCEPT, that while blowing over the radiator will only cool that item, wouldn't it also force air through the engine compartment and just dissapate heat by convection from around the engine/components externally ? I don't recall seeing/running into an electric water pump while under the hood on many occasions...So don't think the M103 has an aux coolant circulator. |

Aux. Coolant pump
BnOBob,
If the 89 300e is like the 90 300E (and I am guessing it is), you will have a small coolant pump on the passenger side fender well - right under the coolant fill tank. |
