Let's hope that Audi has higher specs than BMW demands...

The dealer drained the pain and torque converter and refilled.. I watched them do most of it.

The shift quality is improving slightly as the days go by both the upshift and downshift into 3rd gear.. been about 700 miles since the fluid change.

I'm seriously considering dumping in a little trans-x to see what happens.. thoughts??

Shift

Does your car shift allright when you shift it manually...If so then your problem is the B Valve...you can try the trans X... it is not going to hurt anything...Jim

nhdoc is correct. I remember seeing a MB bulletin on this not too long ago and says the same thing -color means nothing. Buuut in our shop we try to sell a fluid and filter change at about 100k. The benz fluid is red and Iv'e used trans-x for twenty years and fixed alot of shifting problems, though never on a 722.6

It's shifting better and better as the days go by.. but it does the same thing when you manually shift it.

It's been about 3,000 miles.. shift quality has improved slightly but still flares from 2-3.. funny thing it shifts fine until the car gets warm.. is this an indication of anything??

TransX

You might try another quart of transX... Be sure you drain a quart.....I still think that the flaring is in your B valve....I have a couple MB's doing the same thing...but mine will shift from 3rd to 4th if I let up at 20-25 mile an hour and not flare or if I manually shift it does not flare....I am going to fix it by removing the b valve and updating it....I have seen wonders happen to a 240D when it would not shift out of low gear.....went around the block several times and got up to 4500 rpm and no shifting....added 2 qts ..Owner driving and I was the passenger and we went about a block reving it up in low and braking and reving up and finally it shifted...within 10 minutes we had it out in the country and I was driving and downhill from a slow rolling start I ran it up to 80 mph....the car shifted like a new one...9 months later my friend customer is still driving it and it might be flaring between 3-4th...
so I don't think that tranX will hurt it.....just my feelings...Jim

I would never put anything but the MB fluid MB specs in that trans.

Has anyone ever got the MB fluid tested to see what it actually is?

Against my better judgement, I put in 16oz of trans-x.. I drove it for about 10 miles with no noticable difference.. we will see if some more miles does anything.

Strange thing.. before the dealer serviced the trans, I was able to stick clear tubing down the fill tube and draw up fluid.. I tried that today so I could remove as much fluid as trans-x I was going to put in.. nothing would draw up. I have a feeling they underfilled it.. So I just put in 16oz (1/2 qt) without draining anything.

Besides the dealer charges just under $200 for a fluid change, just have them do it. They have the special tool that will measure the fluid temp so they can get the level right. Some things are just not worth doing yourself, what are you saving $100 by doing it yourself? To risk a $3k trans?

My friend had his done for the first time at 152k and it shifted a bit better. I would just change the fluid.

Also I am not 100% but I am pretty sure the original color of this fluid is not red, I think it may be a clean motor oil color. But I am not 100% sure.
I went to the dealer at 78k to change the fluid and mb of palm beach mess it up. DONT EVER GO THERE. they also over filled it.

Hmm? These are two completly different trans.

The SDL's use the old 4 spd I forget the numbers. Change the fluid with regular ATF every 30k miles. I wouldn't bring one to the dealer they are a 30+ year old design any MB indi could do it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

good day guys.... on me sons 1985 190e merc i raised rear of car and replaced rear brake pads and whilst there decided to check the rear diff oil level as we've had the car only a week ..... so i busted me chops to undo the 14mm plug out and stick me little finger in and absolutely no oil in there to be felt ... so i put in castrol diff oil of about 600 to 750 ml in no problem.. whilst i had the car still up i decided to start and run it to bed the pads in ....i had a look after i stopped motor and there was a drop of oil on the pinion flange where it meets the driveshaft .. and and above that on the body i could see and feel thats where during its life where it has leaked from and on to .... so question is would it be wise for a home mechanic as myself to change the pinion seal or will it take special tools ,methods etc? i have done a couple of other brand cars and found them straight forward to do except the undoing of the large nut inside the pinion gear is the merc 190e very hard to do and a difficult proceedure ( ""any boooby traps to look out for "")? any help appreciated

They stop pumping when they're in neutral, not simply at idle -- so sitting in traffic is fine. In fact idling in neutral is even fine. The problems arise when you REV them in neutral. For this reason, cars equipped with these trannies are exempted from certain parts of emissions tests.
