I looked under the hood on the driver side and didn't see where to filter could be located. I just did a search, but didn't see anything... Its somewhere on top...

So where is it? LOL... I did look under the hood at night, so maybe I will find it now... still need a clue ..

Did you remove the air filter housing and look near the firewall?

Actually you don't have to remove the air filter housing to see the oil filter or remove it.

On the 103 engine cars it is accessed between the firewall and aircleaner housing, on the 104's it isn't blocked at all. It is a cartridge under a plastic cap.

The oil filter is under the black cap on the drivers side firewall. It is between the fire wall and the black 1" hose that runs into the rear of the engine. It says 'torque to 25 Nm' ( I think it is 25 Nm). The cap has a special wrench that fits it.

ITs the M104 in my car. Thanks for the info. I think I found it after I posted this, based on the diagram in the link ( I downloaded some sections the manual the other day now can't find it on my laptop )... I just didnt want to start taking something apart that might not be it

SPecial wrench? I figured I would just "twist off" as you do spin on filters on normal cars; take off canister, exchange filters, and put back. If "special" tool needed, is that a MB tool, or an oil filter "plier" like a Mac Tools or Snap ON... those I have.

ITs been a ****ty day raining anyway, so probably won't do it till tommorrow ..

I know that the M103 filters (metal spin on type) have a very wide but short tool that fits the top for easy removal...

M104 engines.... I don't think there is a tool for those oil filters

You could almost do it without the special tool and use a small strap wrench but it's kinda tight in there even though it is sort of on top and very visible. No room for any 'throw'. The canister top spins right off after you break the initial torque on it and it will spin right down almost all the way too...25 Nm is about 18 ft lbs, not a lot of torque. The oil cartridges I'm getting from the MB dealer lately have one end capped so notice which end you are snapping into the canister cap. I think the oil gets pumped around the outside of the filter and the pressure drives it thought the paper and down the center tube.

Pardon me, Yosshimura....are you not the one who questioned why MB was such a maintainance hog....rememember that post. I was just wondering after 590 posts, you are just getting to change the oil for the first time.
