High idle re-visit, please help
Upon start, my car will idle at 1200 RPM. When it reaches 80 C, it will drop to 1000 RPM at P and 750 on R or D. I got 5 ohm on ICV, 3.8 V when it runs at 1200 and 4.5 V when it runs at 1000 RPM.
It should not be OVP because I am getting Voltage to the ICV. I could not find any leak with spary carb cleaner method. I shorted out TPS idle but it did not lower the idle this time. The car runs pretty smooth so it should not be oxygen sensor. I am lost and confused. Could I just drive the car with such a minor high idle? Other than wearing out brakes, does it harm transmission? Any other down sides? |

I may not be able to help with this, but I doubt anyone else will be able to either until the year/model of car is provided.

Check temp sensor and wiring, it may "think" the engine is still cold.

The car is a 1991 560 SEL. I have also measured the ohm of the cis/ezl temperature sensors and they are where it need to be.
If I let the car coast around 40 MPH, I could see the RPM coming down to ~1200 then suddenly jump back up to 1500 RPM. When I just park the car and shift to P, it will be at 1000 RPM for about a couple seconds then go up to 1200. It just seems the car want to idle but something is telling the computer to go to a higher RPM. Could I just drive the car like this? Start up in the morning, 1000 RPM at P, stop at red light, 750 - 800 RPM in D, and arrived at work 1200 RPM on P. It is about 200 higher than spec in D. |

I had same problem with my 1990 300TE. Replacement of the throttle housing with integral throttle position switch fixed it beautifully thanks to my local independent, Brooklyn Motoren Werke in beautiful downtown Brooklyn, WI (absolutely recommended by the way). Part number was 201.5404.245 I believe but yours may be different...
Good luck |
