VIN help
I just had front brakes (pads rotors and sensors) put on my 92 400e and the mechanic said he ordered 400 parts and they did not fit...then checked the VIN and it came up as a 300e. He ordered 300 parts and it is all good.
Can this be? I have 400e badges, a v8, etc. What else can I check? should I run the VIN somewhere else? Or did early 400's have 300 ID's? Just seems odd. I thought the 400 might have a little more surface area on the rotors/pads...for all the HP I need to stop. Thanks for your thoughts! John |

I dunno what is going on but about a couple of months ago, I had to have a throttle body actuator replaced on my '93 400E. I gave Phil at PARTSHOP my VIN and he sent me one overnite. The one that came was the wrong one. It was the right one according to Phil's computer but the one that was in the car was a different PN. Once my mechanic gave Phil the right PN he sent me out the correct one.
So I don't know how come there is such a deviance from the VIN to PN programs.

There was a chassis cutoff point sometime in the early production of the 400E which makes it difficult to get the correct brake parts the first time. The best thing to do is to get the part number off of the brake rotors on the car to get the correct parts. If you have a V8 and a chassis number of 124034 then you have a 400E. All 400Es have 4 piston front calipers but there is a difference in the rotors.

the chassis number is on a plate in the front of the engine compartment, right? I do see 124034 there (I think it is the second number on the plate).
Thanks for the info! |
