old Volvo wagons are IN!!! (rolling stone mag)
I can only assume that means old MB wagons as well. but seriously, tons of college kids have their hand-me-down wagons from their parents, just like me,... and it has become a trend..

God I hate Volvos
Their damn "reputation" for reliability. With their fun little timing belts, their idiotic and un aerodynamic design, their overly rigid square bodies, and the misnomer that they are the most reliable cars ever. God.
When you say reliability, most people think an 80's Volvo, and not many think an 80's MB diesel, although numbers wise, the MB is cheaper to operate and have a better engine reliability record. Damn Volvos. My 240D doesn't have a MAF meter or an engine computer to go wrong or a blower motor that is in the middle of the dash. Sorry for hijacking the thread. I am not a big Volvo friend. My friend John has a 240DL sedan he thinks is the "shiznit". Everything is breaking at 190K miles, plastic is cracking everywhere, he's leaking coolant, put on a head gasket, replaced the MAF and engine computer, and various other crap. I have vented now. Sorry Peyton300TD Your wagon is beautiful. I'd love a black 300TD, with black interior and a third row seat. Actually, make it a Euro 240TD with a 4 speed manual. Awesome car. |

Personally, I prefer wagons. When I first bought it, my friends here at school thought I was crazy. My old Volvo is fun to drive [5sp], turbocharged, and no one looks at it twice. I can fit all my friends and all my crap in it, which is also a plus. I would like a 300TD, but alas, they are too much money. The Volvo was good and cheap. A lot of people laugh at it, until they take a ride in it.

Last Merc Club meeting a person who had been working in MB Australia for 30years gave a speech about his time there. I remember at one point he said that the only reason volvo were precived as the safest car was because that's what they were pushing in there marketing campain. In reality though mercs are just as safe as volvo's, regardles of all the mumbo jumbo you keep hearing.

I think there are more old Volvo wagons in Eugene Oregon than there are people. I have worked on a bunch of them and feel that they are HIGHLY over rated would rather drive an old Chevy wagon......

Just saw a "Pringles" commercial last night, featuring a bunch of (college-aged) guys and girls in or near a neon-green Volvo wagon. Don't know what year, but it looked like a 70's-era model.
That "Rolling Stone" article may have some merit! ![]()

Volvos
The only cars with 2.3 litre inline four cylinder engines that get in the low twenties for mileage. Anyone ever hear of "AERODYNAMICS"?
F Volvos. |

123, come over to the dark side, it is fun. In all seriousness, I have the Volvo for fun, yes [Come on, I am 20, and the 240D just doesn't give me my jolies like my sweedish mistress.] Plus, the 240D gets to stay in the nice warm garage during the salty winter, while the Volvo lives on the street. Mine may have a 2.3 liter turbo charged 4 cyl, the 20mpg it gives me is better than the 15 or so I would get with the 2.9 liter 6 in my Bronco II. All said, the Volvo isn't as well built as a Merc, but it does get me where I need to go and I can have fun going there.
