Getting a new windshield tomrrow
On the drive over to Arizona I had a semi toss a couple rocks at me. The 560 took two hits, one dead center in the windshield, the other in direct line with the driver .
I had the day off so I took a cruise to Chandler, AZ, milled around the MB Dealer there and checked on the price of new glass. Then I went by the insurance company, and true to form they balked at "dealer" glass. Thanks to the search function here I was able to determine several OEM brands of glass before calling the windshield installers used by the local agent. Had a nice long chat with the company and found they use only OEM glass AND new clips if the installation calls for them. They will be installing either Sigla or Sekurit (sp) glass tomorrow, all I have to do is stop by the dealer and get another MB decal for the passenger side. For Sixto: I will watch closely and ask questions, hopefully find the secret for getting the chrome strip to lay correct across the top of the windshield.

My brother just had his windshield replaced for the same reason on his W202. They told him that there were two kinds of glass they could use (I have no idea which though) and that they were they same aside from a small merc-star etched into one of them, which carried a $200 higher price tag.
I was also surprised that they came to the house, and replaced it in like 30 min! |

it's harder to get sigla or sekurit windshields anymore. i think there are specific models you can still get them for. there is a high probability that you get OEM'd PPG glass if you buy a windshield from a dealer. it will have the tristar on it but it won't be sekurit or sigla. i had two windshields replaced last year. my original sekurit windshield was badly scratched and pitted. i had the same sort of accident and got it replaced with an OEM PPG windshield. they tried to tell me it was german but i showed them where it said "PPG". that got cracked too (in the same spot no less). i asked for a good quality replacement windshield and got a "safevue" which i find to be just as good, fit and finish wise. i saved a few bucks but it wasn't $200. there was such a windshield available but the installers didn't recommend it....

Well the new glass is in. The installer arrived on time and had a Sekurit windshield (minus the Star). Took about an hour to remove the old glass and sealing compound but only a few minutes to set the new glass.
I'm glad I was able to watch the job because now I know how to remove the runners at the A pillars. Definitely something one needs to know when prepping for a paint job. Also got to see the heating pad under the wipers, installer had always thought the pad for easing the install of new glass! Once I told him what the function was, he took extra care when laying my glass and advised he would remember what the pad was for. So we both learned something today. Hopefully I won't catch any stray rocks on the drive home in a couple weeks.
