This is a wheely serious decision, pun intended heh
Im looking through wheels for my w124 benz and im having trouble deciding whether or not i want to stay with BENZ/AMG style wheels or to just get some other style flashy rims. Note that i am a young guy (19 sophmore in college) so my influences tell me to put 20 inch chrome rims on my car , but i like my classy original looking w124. So basically I was wondering what the general consensus was for staying stock style or not.

17 or 18" AMG monoblock II are the traditional AMG wheels for a w124, that always look good on the car.
You wont be able to fit 20's ont he car without serious work, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you want tires as thin as dental floss, and unless you want to bend the rims on a driveway dip. not to mention the suspension components wearing out. you can do a 17x7.5 wheel with 225/45/17 tires, or you can do an 18x8 wheel, with I believe 225/40/18, but not exactly sure on that tire size. Also if your car is not lowered, it will look more like a rally car, with about 4 inches or more of gap betweent he fender lip and the tire. if going with a 17x7.5, an offset of 35 is recommended. if going with an 18x8, an offset of 35 will work, but you may experiece rubbing. Do a search on member subman, and check out his page for information on 18's on a w124. I've seen 19's on a w124 wagon, they looked good, but to me there wasnt enough sidewall ont he tires to provide a good enough ride, and I am sure there was some rubbing. Alon

I am thinking of getting an extra set of wheels for my E420, keeping teh stock for winter. I toyed with upsizing, but I think I have settled with staying with 15s, but switching to the sportline wheels which were 1/2 inch wider and going with the appropriate tires (205/60s I think). I have heard this wheel tire combo provides great results in terms of performance and handling while maintaing a stock look.

i believe even the 500E's had 15 inch rims, albeit much wider ones. i have 16" wheels with 205 55's which give it a more aggressive lower stance. i got the mille miglia bellos which are sort off sportline knock offs (i think they look better). 15 inchers with 205 60's would give acceptable handling with a better ride IMHO...

The 500E's had 16x8 wheels with 225/55/16 tires...
I wouldn't put anything bigger than 17" on a W124. Maybe 18" on the E500 just because the stock wheels are already bigger. I do prefer only 1+ size. I am 19 too hehehe :p

If you put really good tires under a 300E on 18s, you will be fine. 225/40ZR18 is right alon, thats a good size on 18x8.
I really like the 7 spoke CLK wheels on the 300E cars.

Jason, I put the 7X15 sportline 8-holes on my 300CE. I run 205/60-15 Michelin MVX4+ and it does provide a better look compared to a 195/65-15 tire IMO....a little more of a "flush" look than the stock 15-hole wheels I had on previously. A little while later I changed the suspension to sportline too. Much more of a difference then Steve pic of the "flush" look.....(not on the S600 :p ) Last edited by el presidente; 05-12-2009 at 08:59 AM. |

I would go with Ashman's comments...
The car is tuned "full circle" so anything added outside the design parameters of the vehicle will degrade performance. Stick with a slight upgrade only. And considering your age, I know the temptation to "pimp out" your vehicle is strong, but resist the "dark side" Luke! You own a classy vehicle, not a "ricer" or a GM "deuce". We don't want your next thread to be about how to outfit your W124 with one of those "coffee can" mufflers!
