Anybody going to the military parade in DC on the 14th

I'll probably ride up to watch it. I don't care if you are R or D it should be quite a spectacle.

It would be convenient for me to show up as I could get there in less than an hour.

But as I'm not even guaranteed a chance to moon the wannabe dictator, there's no reason to waste my time.

I will admit that I would probably get a kick out of seeing it. As I have said, I grew up in Roswell, NM. Renowned alien repository Walker Air Force Base was a mere 3 miles from where we lived. I just looked on Google Earth, it was only 5 miles away from the city center. I look back on the small scale of things fondly. I just checked Google maps, I'm 15 miles from the nearest Pick n Pull. I regularly go 3 miles out of my way just to get to a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. From about age 10 to 13 I used to go every year to the public exhibition day at the base. A good friend of mine's father was in the Air Force, they lived on base.

I must've scampered onto three or four B-52's over the years. Also KC135 refueling planes and those big old style Sikorsky helicopters. It's a paradox, in some ways I hate these things while in other ways I do understand that they were built ideally to help keep me and my family alive. My child's brain was attracted to them in a big way.

I saw a photo similar to this one years ago. That big bulbous nose is more than just part of a pretty face:

Helicopter linkage has got to be pretty complicated. I can only imagine there are strict maintenance protocols.

Its like none of you have ever visited a museum.

The National Air and Space Museum in DC and its extension in Sterling, VA are both available to the general public. The one in DC is free and the only cost to the one in Sterling is $12 for parking.

I've been to both many times and look what I found without spending more than 30 seconds looking.

I went to National Air Force Museum in Dayton where they had the "hood" open on that jewel. That is where I saw engine configuration.

I always appreciate seeing the machined out in the open, as demos or full operation. We have some great air shows where I am -- Dover AFB puts on a great historical show every year, and we have the ocean city MD show this weekend which must be one of the best in the country.

Military parade seems neat, but a colossal waste of time and money. It also rings of authoritarianism, most historical accounts of military parades in my lifetime are references to the USSR or Tianenman Square....not a good look, and probably not too far off at this point.
