Jeeps? Are there any Jeep owners here ?

What's your experience with them as reliability goes?

Which variety do you have experience with?

Seems they'd be a great vehicle to own in the resale end, especially with the Wrangler Jeep series of rugged Jeeps....

I sold a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 FT 4X4, with 16K miles on it for $10K back in 2004. I'd of kept it, but it wasn't the Wrangler variety of Jeep.

I have a 2021 grand cherokee trailhawk with the 5.7. It started having metal shavings in the oil at 20k and the dealer won't toucb it unless they see the filings themselves. No doubt its a bearing going. Hoping I can get them to "see" the filings in the service bay (realistically its if they feel like justifyjng a new engine)....

Other stuff, the rear defrost crapped out just after warranty ended and requires (likely) a new tailgate. LF air strut is rattly already too. I have babied this thing. My parents got a new GC with the 3.6 and in the first year have a laundry list of warranty items (thankfully all covered) including a bad suspension sensor that crapped about 1000mi from home.

Run away. Stellantis/chrysler/whatever is going to go out of business if they can't fix their quality. Especially if they want to charge 70k+ for vehicles like my GC. Otherwise its super comfortable, tows well, and very capable offroad, but no way in hell would I buy another new one.

The filter should have the shavings. Take it in and cut it open with them.

I am at the mercy of the dealer service techs. I brought my blackstone oil analysis results, along with photos from the last oil change that showed shavings in the catch tray, and asked them to look at the filter. They apparently did, and also looked at the cam solenoid screens, which also apparently did not show anything. Do I believe them? No, but don't really have a leg to stand on unless I watch in the bay next to them (not something any modern shop allows).

I don't really have a choice but to play their games while the engine is still under warranty. Luckily the car seems to be running fine still, but the 5.7s have a reputation of eating cam lobes, even after all these years and millions of units. We haven't figured out what the plan is yet -- still have 1.5 years and 15k until the engine warranty is up so will probably let that run out and make a decision as to whethrr to dump it, rebuild, swap engines, or what.

If it is the dealer where you purchased the vehicle that is somewhat in your favor. Ask to speak to the owner of the dealership and voice your concerns and document them.

I've not heard positive feedback about modern Jeep products.

What did the oil analysis show?

Can an extended warranty still be purchased from the dealership?

If you wish to get out of ownership, selling it while it still has transferrable warranty left is preferable.

Me too. But, I haven't been reading Jeep Forums. Those forums are going to have A LOT of "homers," defending the products out of false pride. As is always the case with every automotive forum. The engines are where the problems are located.

My business partners 2023 Cherokee whatever the nice model is Summit Reserve? has been flawless.

They are nice at the moment you can lease the 4XE version I think pretty cheap.

The downside is the dealer experience sucks, which is one of the reasons I'm done with Ram after this truck. I'm tired of paying $70k+ thousand for a vehicle and being treated like I paid $20k.

For what a loaded Cherokee costs you can go buy yourself an X5, Lexus, or Genisus and have a better experience.

I have a 2020 Cherokee (the little one, not the Grand). Bought it to tow behind a motorhome and the spousal unit drives it as their daily transportation. Have owned it 5+ years from new, has about 50k miles on the odometer + 30k more towed miles. There is a very limited choice of vehicles that can be flat towed and Jeep is big player in that space.

I’m shocked at how good it’s been. It has literally never been back to the dealer - no recalls, no warranty work, and no paid repairs. Really no problems at all. The plastic piece coving the windshield camera sometimes buzzes a little bit, that’s about it. A set of tires, a battery at year 4, and scheduled maintenance is all I’ve ever needed to do to it.

It has the 2.0 liter DI turbo engine and it’s a bit noisy under acceleration with that diesel-like clatter that direct injection gasoline engines tend to make. But it’s a good combo of power and fool economy. My main complaint is the fuel tank is too small, about 15.5 gallons. Wish it held 20.

I also have a 2018 Pacifica minivan from new, and it too has been surprisingly reliable, solid, and low maintenance. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.

Not the same dealer -- I don't think the dealers actually care either way. It isn't exactly the best experience.

The analysis (done with 1500mi) showed 3x the copper content of a normal 10k interval...definitely not normal. Extended warranty can be purchased, but idk....might just dump it. It will depend if the dealer stands behind their product...why spend for ext warranty if they don'5 bat an eye at the clear issue infront of them? Might as well flush that money away.

Yeah, the dealership experience leaves a lot to be desired. They have tried to price themselves upmarket while the dealer and quality have not kept up.

They haven't sold many 4xes....the 2.0L is go9d but lots of horror stories on the hybrid/battery system. I like the idea of the 4xe but if my ancient port injected 5.7L pushrod v8 is having issues, not sure I am going ti gamble on a complex PHEV...a buddy of mine worked on that system at chrysler and mentioned it was entirely phoned in last minute.

That said, the standalone 2.0L DI engines are quite reliable across the cars that use them (includes stuff like the alfa giulia).

JC, which model motorhome do you have?
Which towing & braking system manufacturer did you go with?
Or did you kit or customize your tow assembly?

FYI: Remco can install a FOUR DOWN system on just about anything (car/SUV/pickup truck) you may want to have retrofitted.... Great systems, and quick service installation too.

Never know till you ask. When we bought our GLC, it was at a dealer and I was on good terms with the shop manager. He took me back to the shop, they put it on the list and the two of us looked at the underside of the car.

It’s gone now but I had a Tiffin Open Road 34PA. That’s a quad slide coach on the Ford 26k GVWR chassis. It was a newer model with the 7.3 liter Godzilla v8 - a must have for me. Also had the Liquid Spring active suspension installed front and rear. The ride and drive was unreal. Very pleased with the coach overall. Unfortunately the spouse burned out on it.

I used blue Ox base plate and tow bar for the Jeep. No complaints. It was well designed and performed without any problems. I did the install myself. It was a bit finicky because my Jeep is a Limited trim and has active grill shutters that complicate the wiring in the front. A Trailhawk makes for an easier install.

Braking was an RVI3 portable. Chose this largely because it saved me from an ~8 hour install of a permanent unit. But it’s also one of the few proportional units that’s not based on coach air brakes (which of course the Ford chassis does not have). I was perfectly satisfied with it. Never tested the breakaway function

Demco stopped making transmission pumps years ago. They still do driveshaft disconnects, but that doesn’t help for any transverse engine fwd/AWD vehicles. Regardless, Iprefer something the manufacturer supports for flat towing.

You ever consider a Prevost conversion, or, a Newell Coach? It's a coin toss to me, BTW. Each has it's advantages.

Thanks for the tow bar assy. knowledge shared!
