Bremi/Karlyn/STI DISTRIBUTOR CAPS
How do we feel about them? They run half price or less to the Genuine MB or Bosch, and more than the really cheap stuff like the Italian FACET. I inspected my original today ( 39 YO ) and it has some 'burn' on the lower post contacts. I polished that with a dremel brass brush wheel, but for sure it is time. I did the plugs about 30k ago and won't even look at them until summer. And that 2004/5 battery is still starting her right up after sitting 30 days in 5 deg F the other day when I noticed a slight misfire/hesitation, while driving, hence the checking of the ignition parts. I haven't run it yet since cleaned up because no need to drive it at the moment but I am sure it will be better after the grunge removal. So what is our collective feeling about Bremi parts quality? I never heard of them before today myself. Thanks !

If it is inexpensive enough buy 2 so you won't be stranded if it fails. When I was a kid we were stranded when a dis cap failed.

I had a fiat with spring metal band clips. Kept jumping off. Had to get out and re seat it occasionally
Good idea, I'll keep the old one on hand. Now I notice that these never come as sets. Another pile of $ for the rotor. I just found a BOSCH rotor for ~$15 delivered and jumped on it. MINE !!!!! |

As long as we are looking at alternate parts....Standard Motor Parts - SMP - sometimes called Intermotor
seems to emulate oem stuff pretty good here is one of their catalogs. https://www.smpbuyersguide.com/standard/data/ige22flx/011/html/export/Ignition%20and%20Electrical%20Illustrated%20Parts%20Guide%202022.pdf Can't search in the pdf ( at least I can't ) but it is laid out in alpha numeric order of their part#s so easy to find their part by their part number, then you see all the cross references. Bremi might be brokering SMP parts? |

Cleaning up the old cap helped while waiting for the new to arrive. The Bremi. Ran it until warmed up but not driven until tomorrow. No apparent off throttle hesitation or stumbling while revving a bit. Even started easier - I think.
My new question is about my discovery. Inside the tube that the rotor sits on was what appeared to be a wad of steel wool. I removed it. I can't imagine what OEM use that was. Perhaps a clever place to store it for a quick touch up? Not very big, considering where it was. Any ideas on this? Is it supposed to be in there? ETA. I just inspected it. It seems to be some fiber not metal. Perhaps to sponge up an oil dose? Is that a thing? |

Great news. Yesterday's drive was wonderful. I forgot how nice the power curve is.
Quick but not thorough research indicated that it was appropriate to put a couple drops of oil, but not too much, now and then on the pad. I put it back in there and added drops. I came across our esteemed member idle talking about sourcing felt. While in town I hit the dollar store, they got some of the koolest things for almost no $. In the tools/automotive area they had assortments of felt pads - like 60 in a package - of various shapes and sizes. For $1.25. I didn't bother to get any because the one in there was worthy of continued use. But now I know where to get felt bits |
