$700k for a Chinese Rolls Royce knock off?

I think it looks hideous on the outside. The inside is meh. I have a hard time believing it will approach the quality and mystique of the Roller much less command nearly double the price.

I watched a top gear episode about these knockoffs. They test drove a few and mocked them relentlessly. Not sure it was this exact car but looks familiar.

The Chinese are where the Japanese were 50 years ago. They'll eventually catch up. China is the largest automobile market in the world, ~35% more cars sold than in the US.

An hour after you drive it, you’re hungry for a Bentley.

The main market for those cars is the Chinese government, for carting CCP officials around. Toyota makes a "Century" that is also a dorky limousine mostly for government use. Russia had ZiL's.

All the Japanese, Russian, and Chinese oligarchs ride around in Rolls-Royces, Maybachs, Bentleys, etc., etc.

How exactly is this a RR knockoff? Its not like this is based on a 30 year old fiat chassis or something, its a bespoke car from a long standing manufacturer.

I kinda like it, and its obviously designed toward the Chinese elite class rather than western taste.

Yup. That’s the scary part.

I remember some cheapo Chinese wanna be vice grips I bought about 25 years ago on the discount aisle at Orchard Supply Hardware, may they Rest In Peace. Three or four dollars IIRC. After about two weeks, I dialed it up to grab something pretty hard, one of the jaws snapped in half.

My thought: “Chinese steel.”

Not anymore. Might have to do with so many US companies going over there and teaching them how to do it. Irwin, maker of the original Vice Grips, stayed US made longer than most of them, but they eventually went over to China as well.

There have been cars that are no good when we look at them objectively, but we still love them dearly. Cars like the Jaguar E-Type, DeLorean DMC-12, Dodge Viper, or most Alfa Romeos are not that great at their job as vehicles. But they live rent-free in our hearts. We believe that the Hongqi L5 has got that quality. Maybe it’s the front 3/4 looks from the ground up, or the fact that each door weighs more than a motorcycle.
Reminds me of a few doors I’ve hung. I recently bought a boneyard rear door for my SDL. I thought it was going to be back breaking, but it was surprisingly lightweight.

I don’t think it looks all that bad, would be interesting to experience it but probably isn’t going to happen.

At that site I found a link for the Japanese high luxury entry, also sort of a Rolls-Royce imitation. At the low price of $180,000 is sort of a bargain by comparison:

Btw this is what the design is based on. Pics are mine, from (an excellent but now defunct) a car museum in Vegas somewhere around 10 years ago. This was Mao's actual limo, but they did export them to my knowledge. This model was discontinued in 81 per wiki.

I knew i saw it somewhere, was thinking a GAZ chaika or one of those soviet cars, but this is it (and obviously the lineage makes more sense)

China makes long range plans. Plus has the political system to engage them. North America seems not to. We as a result are really not doing all that well.

When Japan decided they could now build quality. Most of their merchandise became very expensive. I would not expect less from China. They are already becoming dominate in some things.

You will not find better produced by any other country. Only the prices remain low. Until they have established dominance in enough fields. Enjoy it while it lasts. At anytime China can adjust their currency.

As an example. I serviced the first early color televisions built in North America. They were unreliable and crude to what we buy today. They cost half of what a new car cost.

Japan made them far more reliable. Most flat screen televisions and computer components are made in China today. Flat screen televisons are about 1/30 of what a new car costs today. Plus vastly superior. At some point this is going to change. They are substidising our cost of living currently to some extent.

I mentioned some years back on the site. Some electronic items I was importing direct from China were world class. As was the manufacturing process used to make them. Yet I was paying almost nothing for them. I was unable to figure out how they could do this?

The cost to set up that ability to manufacture had to be massive. Until I found out the same company made military electronics for their armed forces. By manufacturing some items for the commercial market. Helped spread the costs plus they could develop another area of expertise.

Russia has resumed electronic production to some extent. They seem to be paying more attention to the balance of trade issues that north America is.

The miniturization of electronic components was almost unbelievable at the time as well. Today China does not allow export of some of their technology.

The first time I experienced this. I was buying some of their special epoxy based glues from their aerospace industry. Last time I ordered was informed export of the glue was no longer allowed. It was the best glue I have ever used. Cheap at the time as well.

The front reminds me of an early 60s Dodge Dart.
