Other than keeping the fluid level up with distilled water and not over charging them is the only trick I know of. I have seen epsom salt videos proclaiming to restore batteries but I have also seen videos on a gallon of gas going 100 miles plus.I have used InterS, with good results with their refurbished batteries. From what I understand they are batteries on consignment to "ass hat parts stores" getting close to a year old, never used. They take them back and fully charge them, then sell them marked down. So for around 75 to 100 you get a practically new one.

A 3A charger from walmart is pretty good - connect it to the car and let it trickle charge.
However if your battery is really old, there is not much hope - the plates wear out (thats what the mud is in the bottom of an old battery). At best you can wash out an old battery, fill it with new electrolyte and then charge it (at its bubbling voltage - this is dependant on the chemistry of the battery) - then let it rest and retest again. A small way I have found with my small charger is that if the battery charges too quick - its bad. time to replace it. and I always look for small businesses or businesses who sell good materials, e.g. there is a shop in my town that is in the battery business for ages and has good ones - in all price ranges and types.

NAPA here closes out the year olds at half price and you still get the same warranty. Likewise the trucking shops around here to the same (CDL trucks)
I was tempted to replace a group 49 ( IIRC) I have in a W126 last fall. But it still holds 12.6V at 15 years old. Moral of the story is take good care of it. It is a Les Schwab. Look em up. I will definitely compare them for all future batteries. lesschwab.com/batteries |

I would slow charge a new battery(with a Battery Tender, etc) before you install it and not replace it in the parking lot. It may have been setting partially discharged on the shelf for a while. Also as I found Parasitic drain shortens battery life.

There are some you toob videos on refurbing a battery using epsom salts. I've never done any such thing, but it's out there. Just be careful, you'd be playing with a dangerous chemistry set.

I like these guys! It's all about the technique, hard not to appreciate the inventiveness and ingenuity of people, I really like the DC lead welder in use at about 10-12 minutes in. very clever

Yes batteries are stupid expensive these days and aircraft batteries are double stupid expensive. For a vehicle that’s not driven regularly a battery tender and keeping the water level above the plates will extend battery life.

yep mine can't figure out how to open, but its 9 years old. I'll buy at wal mart $125. Auto parts stores just screwed eveyone. Moved here in 95,oil 69 cents a quart, now $6. filters $10. is why I shop ebay, and wal mart for oil.. Its like stores forgot min. wage is the same, half of tennessee is on it.
