John Prine
Singer-Songwriter John Prine Critically Ill With Coronavirus Symptoms
The family of John Prine says the singer-songwriter is critically ill and has been placed on a ventilator while being treated for COVID-19-type symptoms. A message posted on Prine’s Twitter page Sunday said the “Angel from Montgomery” singer has been hospitalized since Thursday and his condition worsened on Saturday. “This is hard news for us to share,” Prine’s family added. “But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and that John loves you.” The 73-year-old Prine, one of the most influential in folk and country music, has twice fought cancer. Most recently, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013 and had part of a lung removed. The surgeries affected his voice but Prine continued to make music and to tour. Before the onset of the virus, Prine had shows scheduled in May and a summer tour planned.

Afraid so. John is some kinda guy but dang he liked to smoke. I saw him few times live. At one show I was sitting close to the front, at one point he took a deep drag on a cigarette, then inadvertently turned sideways as he exhaled. You could see the smoke in the spotlight. Holy crap, he coulda filled a small sail with that exhalation. Not running him down, I smoked too much years ago myself.
He's had lung surgery, this thing is likely to take him.

John Prine, RIP
I was lucky, I saw him at the Paramount in Seattle, maybe mid 80s - Steve Goodman, his long time bud and he who discovered him and facilitated the world's discovery of him warmed up. At the end he came out and backed John up on about 4 songs. Goodman himself passed at a young age, 38 IIRC. The way I heard the story, when he was 18 he was diagnosed with leukemia and was given two years to live. But he misunderstood them, thought they said 20 and he got to work. I just read this obit, as it's probably paywalled for many I hope I'll be forgiven for posting all of it. Quote:

I saw him and his brother with the potatoes in a little dive restaurant bar. The peeps that took us there knew what was up and insisted we go there to eat despite our arguments. The place was locked down with about 50 patrons, and they came out to the set. was a fine evening.

...one day when I become the musical star I've been leading up to my whole miserable life, I can give you a small measure of thanks for having pissed me off enough to finally do it...

I'll tell you what though, music can be a harsh mistress. I'm inconsistant as hell, I don't get it. Sometimes I knock 'em dead, other times after I sing two lines I realize I don't have it that night and wish I could just stop, apologize and get out of there. But that would be weird so I keep torturing myself. The muse. The muse does WTF it wants. And as for making money ... a very few make major money and half of them go nuts with it. I've known a few guys who were quite talented but struggled like hell to make a living with it. One of them sorta famous, but never learned a trade, always on the edge.
