Dieselgate

When the Volkswagen diesel gate story first broke, Mercedes Benz had just sent a cargo ship packed with brand new Mercedes Benz diesel automobiles bound for the United States. They ordered the ship to make a 180 and come back to Germany to unload the cars.

As far as I'm aware, today and now there are no diesel automobiles offered for sale by any manufacturer in these United States.

I took in a VW Dieselgate orphan. With love, kindness, and careful attention, they make great cars.

The NOx problem got solved with DEF. VW's scam was to avoid having to put DEF systems on their four-cylinder diesels. VW's Dieselgate could have been a boone to M-B and BMW.

It's the nano-soot problem that's now killing the diesels.

While DOT and EPA are wringing their hands over the VW "nano-soot" problem, these morons have WAY too much time on their hands:

As far as I'm aware, you're wrong.

Unfortunately diesels are now more expensive to own and operate than modern gasoline, hybrid or electric vehicles. Diesel is dead because economics, not dieselgate.

It’s running about the same as premium in the NE, varies with the heating oil season.

I'm still trying to figure out how they are going to replace heavy diesel powered construction equipment, i.e. road graders, D9 caterpillar tractors, etc along with diesel powered semi-tractor trucks with "alternative fuels".

They had a problem with the six cylinder diesels too.

Apparently, they will eventually be electric. If Tesla can do a semi every other engine could be electric too I imagine.

Imagine a construction site that doesn't constantly reek of diesel fumes. With sub $100/kw batteries now available it's only a matter of time.

VW really screwed it up for the diesel lovers. I love diesels, but I don’t drive one any more because today’s injected gas engines are virtually as good as a diesel. If I were still a diesel driver I wouldn’t be a happy camper.

If you think about how construction equipment is used, you don't need a high revving engine. The enormous stall torque of an electric motor is more useful.
