Talking Desert Heat

Howdy Frank ! .

It was 114* F @ 4PM, now it's -only- 106* @ 5:45PM...... .

I took my leaky new tire to the tire shop, found one really close, maybe 2 miles, puttering along @ 15 MPH or so, they guy was super nice, he spent 15 minutes looking for a 17MM socket then I loosened the lugs by hand using the same Mercedes lug wrench I use to tighten them and the occasionally road side tire change, didn't see anything in the tread so I wiggled the valve stem and it came off in my hand .

He jacked the car where I asked him to and only charged me $10 ca$h money, $ well spent IMO .

It rained here this morning, I slept late (8AM) and so missed it but there were clouds and a decent breeze, hot air isn't so bad if it's breezy .

? Do you go out on the lake bed ? .

Moto, Dune Buggy or perhaps a Gyro copter ? .

Howdy Nate,
I used to 4x4 up in the hills. But when BLM fenced it off and started charging to go in I haven't been out there unless we had a plane crash out there. A neighbor has a landing strip just west of the airport and he runs his business from there. Flies gyros and ultralights and other such things.

Post Vacation Fun

Thanx, I remember going out there 45 years ago when there were only a couple rangers, most folks were decent and didn't cause troubles .

In his late teens my son bought a junk rock buggy having heard many stories about my old friends having too much fun in rock buggies, he made it run and took me out there to see how different it is, I never went back .

We're having lots of fun here in Indio, I had to replace a valve stem on one tire in the 115* heat then the next day I discovered the lights left on in my 'Benz even though I've not driving at light since before we arrived here and the light switch knob is recessed into the dash....

I always carry some 0 gauge jumper cables in the truck but took that milk crate out this time for more uneeded trunk space.... .

A nice fellow who works here asked his boss if he could give me a jump, boss said no , odd because in August of 2014 the heat killed the battery and the management here gave me a jump start....

So, the kid loans me his 8 gauge cables and a nice little old lady in a brandy new Subaru Forester let me use her battery, twice the starter only groaned, the third time it roar to life, she was in no hurry, telling me how she'd won $50,000 in the California Lotto this Spring and spent it all on this new car....

I loaded up the family and headed to Wallymart where they sell 900CCA Group H8 batteries fir $135 including the core charge, the car did re start after a 15 minute drive but at 5 years old I decided to replace the battery anyway and keep the 5 year old core, it'll have plenty of juice for the routine testing and so on I now use a 25 year old VW Beetle battery for.....

Had a nice lunch, back to the room and they boys jumped in the pool, some jerkhoff stole the one boy's glasses, then a nice (and seriously cute) lady came to our door, it turns out she'd noticed our boys playing nicely with her grand son and invited them to dinner, she lives a couple miles from me and is involved in Foster care too ~ funny how small the world is some times .

She even likes the same old timey pizza place we got to back home .

Life goes on, SWMBO and I are going out to an Adult dinner now .

Howdy Nate,
I think most of the people out on the dry lake are good people. Just a few can make things unpleasant. I don't see the BIG crowds on the holidays like 20 years ago. I don't see the crowds for the timing association for their runs either. People are into computers more than going out and playing in the dust and heat.

Post Good People

I agree, it only takes one or two to ruin things for everyone and those sort of people don't care .

Post Time To Go Home

Both of our 12 Y.O. Foster boys told me they'd like to stay here and not go home to L.A. in spite of the heat .

One of them is gregarious and always meets new people yesterday he was at the swimming pool and asked a Woman '? how old are you ?' (DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON ! )

She replied "how old do you think I am ?" .

He looked at her wrinkled & sagging skin and said "I dunno, maybe in your seventies ?" .

"THAT'S FUCXXD UP !" was her reply, he noticed her husband wasn't much amused either, he told me 'Nate, you know how your mouth twists whenever I say something rude or foolish in public ? that's how he looked " .

Oops .

Howdy Nate,
Sounds like you have a couple "desert rats" there. If they like it there now they will probably like it the rest of the year. Time to move;-)
