12mpg for a 37foot vehicle weighing untold tons wouldn't be too bad.

The Eurovan based camper is touted as fuel efficient and "green" ect, and it gets 15 to 20mpg for something only 22 feet long in the camper world.

So...

Transmission was rebuilt and the shop called me saying it needed about 100 miles put on it to reset the obd2 parameters so it could be inspected.

I had a jobsite location about 50 miles away yesterday, so figured why not kill two birds with one stone and take this camper from the shop to the job so it could be inspected sooner.

Went and picked it up and all was well for approximately 32 miles, at which point the rebuilt transmission exploded. And by exploded i mean boom with enough violence to make me feel like i drove over a stick of dynamite. It is now back at the shop and this time they are replacing the transmission on their dime.

Review so far though- it drives extremely small. It feels smaller than a full size cargo van actually. This is slightly dangerous as you forget you are in a 5 ton vehicle and get too close to cars in front of you. Its very comfortable and id call the power similar to a 240, maybe a bit more. With some practice it is plenty, adequate for the vehicle, but i wouldnt dare tow anything in it. The lesharo diesels must have felt like half a 240 in use, but at least they were mostly manual gearboxes.

Complaints- im too tall for the front seat. Its a winnebago rotating seat and cannot go back further, i need at least 5 to 6 inches more. There must be a way to adjust this i havent found though, as i couldnt move it forward either.

Bonus- for an rv that sleeps 4, it fits fine on a normal flatbed wrecker with a 12 foot 4 total heaght mounted up. This will im certain be useful. No special towing and will fit under overpasses on the tow truck the next time it breaks.

You may want to consider using a Chevy 6.2L or 6.5L (NA or Turbo) diesel with 4L80E four-speed. 382-392 cu in V8 tried and true in HUM VEES.

I have this combo in my two 1-1.5 ton trucks, G30 box trucks.

I have bought extra unused 4L80E trans for 125.00 at government auctions. In the original roll-around crate.

CAT, GM and Cummins compatible engines go for 1800-2300. Some have as little a 0 or as much as 4000 miles on them, pulled from vehicles that were used for testing different types of bodies or where the 6.2/6.5 NA were replaced with 6.5 Turbos.

I get 19-21 MPG driving this from Michigan to California in summer, so AC was used.

I also carry 50 gal in jerry cans so I don't pay 4.00/gallon in places like Needles, CA. 50 gallons gets me 1300 miles plus another 25 gallons in the tank, I could almost go without stopping to CA.

I am looking at buying a small dead motor home to use and working on it on the weekend. Small with sink, toilet, table/foldup bed and small cooking area. I just mostly need a portable toilet and bed when traveling, it's always possible to take a shower at a truck stop and I don't need gourmet food when camping.

How do you get that kind of mileage out of that combo? I've got the same combo in my 93 GMC pickup and I can't get above 13mpg while towing my 3500lb trimaran across country.

The car is perfectly tuned, I don't drive it over 70 and keep the speed steady, tho there is no speed control.

I noticed a BIG increase when I got new tires and properly inflated them.

I have to admit 15 mpg when dragging a 20' car trailer with a Citroen on it.

I keep that dog in top shape and it does not disappoint me.

The 1986 with three-speed does less well. But that one was made to go 55, when that was the law. At 55 it gets decent mileage.

I think we are both thinking the G30 box van was getting that mileage, what car are you referring to?

I was about to say thats amazing, my 6.5 express cargo couldn't do that loaded.

My camper van gets mileage like a heavy pickup. We just got back from another trip to Maine and it is worth the gas. The picture is a random clip from the internet but it is even the same color, just like mine. Falcon 190.

One of the advantages of a vehicle like this is the tow capacity. Most RVs are tow challenged.

Plus its a conventional E350 otherwise, and nice and stout. Can be worked on anywhere by anyone, and it wont be breaking that often.

This is a major problem with this eurovan cab. I cant remember the last time i saw a eurovan in the wild. Even a VW dealer wont touch it. Out of curiosity i called the local VW and the guy essentially said hell no for anything the size of a camper.

Looking very likely they forgot to fill the diff part of the transaxle, which for reasons only known to VW, has its own reservoir, and is super hard to fill in this application.

Oops. The diff is filled with 75w90. As far as I know every front drive VW automatic has a separate lube for the differential.

Another great thing about the camper van is that it is legal in parking spaces. I can park downtown in New Orleans for Mardi Gras or Salem for Halloween. Probably wouldn't do either but I like having the option.
