From a graphic in the second link, it looks like Mindanao isn't taking a direct hit. I spent a month in the PI in 2002 doing Seabee stuff, mostly on Baslian with a stop in Zamboanga (Mindanao) on the way back. I didn't much care for the climate, but the local people I met were quite awesome. I know and work with quite a few Filipinos. I hope their families are okay.

On climate change the most pronounced portion has been the warming of the pacific ocean. This will certainly help circular type storms gain strength.

The information that the pacific has experienced higher warmup rates than any place else is recient I believe. If true more violent storms originating in the pacific seem to be a reasonable end possibility..

I could only try to visualize the damage from sustained winds of 196 mph. I believe a lot of homes in that area are constructed of concrete blocks because of cyclones anyways. Seems to me a hole in the ground with a sound well anchored cover would be the best ideal in a non flooding area in conditions like those.

Anyway all we can do is support them when this storm is over, they will need it.
It goes without saying that the US Armed Forces will be knee deep in the aftermath aid effort. Old hat for America's Navy & Marines.

Hundreds dead, likely thousands more. The place looks almost as bad as footage from the Japanese tsunami and in some instances the storm surge was similar in effect. Probably pulling untold numbers of folks out to sea. Quite a horrific storm. They're going to take a while to recover.

I've been reading that since it's a small island, as the storm passed the waves went westward, and when the storm passed, the waves went eastward coming from the other side. Double whammy!

I hope those relief funds that other governments are offering won't go to corrupt officials. Too many of them around! Bohol had this kind of fate, the mayor didn't want the funds to go directly to those who needed it but to the gov't first for redistribution. Makes me wonder what his priority was.

As expected.

OKINAWA, Japan -- At the request of the Government of the Philippines, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has directed U.S. Pacific Command to support U.S. Government humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations (HADR) operations in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.........

3rd MEB to provide humanitarian assistance to Philippines > Headquarters Marine Corps > News

...."Super Typhoon Haiyan hammered six central islands Nov. 8, devastating the city of Tacloban and leaving a huge storm surge and widespread flooding in its wake.

Secretary of State John Kerry immediately offered assurance of U.S support, and Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told reporters that day the U.S. military was prepared to respond, if requested.

Little noted that U.S. forces frequently provide direct relief and recovery support during and after natural disasters.

Nowhere in the world are natural disasters as prevalent as in the Asia-Pacific region. It sits on the earthquake-prone “Ring of Fire” and is tormented by hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis, floods and mudslides. As part of its extensive regional engagement, Pacom works closely with regional nations to promote disaster preparedness and build resilience; and to respond quickly and effectively should disaster strike. One of the best ways to do that is through the exercise program, command officials said.

“It’s the right thing to do,” particularly in light of frequent and often devastating natural disasters that strike across the region, Navy Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, the Pacom commander, told American Forces Press Service last week.

“Also, if something is going to happen in the Pacific that is going to create a churn in the security environment, the most likely thing will be a humanitarian disaster problem of some kind – whether it is horrific typhoons or tsunamis or floods or something else,” Locklear said"...........

Heard from my friend. He lives near Dipolog City. Little damage there. It's out of the path of typhoons.

My Wife has Family in Cebu and Leyte. Although on Leyte they are on the opposite of the Island from Tacloban.
She had has not been able to contact any of them.
Her Brother lives on their 4 hectare Farm and that Farm is like 500 Yards from the River. There is a River, a dirt Road and the Farm.
It is very likely the River flooded and the Farm got flooded.

My Friend of over 20 Years has a Brother and some Nieces that lived in Tacloban. There is a extremely good chance some were injured or killed. No contact with them either.

Clearly Aid is not going to reach them in enough time or in enough amounts to save them from suffering more.

My Wife was concerned about this. And, apparently the corrupt Officials are using the Money to buy Property here in the USA.

If Politicians don't steal the Money have been know to distribute goodies in a manner that mainly benefits their constituents; here in the US also.

I hope the US does a better job with Helping that it did with Katrina.

An illustration of how a natural disaster can impact almost anyones life at some point. The odds of one happening to the average guy are small but still present.

The forces of nature with global temperature increasing. No matter what is causing it will mean some people will be impacted like never before in their time and areas. Fortunately the increase although seeming fast is not so fast it cannot be adjusted to if it becomes a more serious issue.
