Apple agrees to a $400-million settlement over e-book price fixing - LA Times

The settlement agreement, which still requires court approval, is contingent on Apple’s appeal of the New York federal court’s 2013 finding that the company worked with five major book publishers to artificially raise e-book prices.

Anybody see the Jobs movie? I thought it was pretty good. Kutcher is a good actor.

Apple’s third-quarter earnings report, released on Tuesday, shows the company sold 4.8 million Macs –up 9 percent from the year-ago quarter and up 5 percent from the second quarter, setting a new third quarter record.

These results are notable when taking into account that, according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the overall PC market has contracted by 12 percent compared to the same period last year.

our household was part of that Mac number, we just added a 27" iMac to replace a 2007 20" iMac.

Desktop PCs are on the decline, laptops rule.

Currently have a MacBook Air, and am thinking about picking up a MacPro for my desk at home. Love my Air, but need something with a little more horsepower for doing some video editing stuff.

Was considering a Mac Pro 4.1 with firmware upgrade to 5.1 and then CPU and ram. Seems like a cost effective way compared to a 5.1, certainly cheaper than the the new "trash can" 6.1

I was actually looking at mid-09 Pros, and had no idea that you could do that. Looks like I might be going that route! Thanks!

That's the reason why the Pro 3.1 or older are dirt cheap while the 4.1 is still holding value. It's my understanding that the firmware upgrade will also allow the 4.1 single processor units to take the cheaper i7 processors, but most folks seem to favor the Intel quadcore Westmere CPU. Keep in mind you need the faster RAM to make it worthwhile.
