Single actions are popular for their nice light consistent trigger pull. This is why a lot of people like them.
It sounds like to me you want a single double action, which is pretty much what any modern semi auto is unless you get DAO which a lot of police agencies love. Something like a Sig P220? I'd recommend a Sig P239 or P227 for a single stack DA/SA carry gun. Sig makes pistols you want to get into a gunfight with. A lot of companies like Kel Tech, quite frankly don't IMHO. The P239 will carry 7 rounds of .40S&W which is a hot round. More so if you load with these: http://www.hornady.com/store/40-S-and-W-165-gr-Critical-Defense/ My bedside gun, the Beretta 96 has a mag full of them.

If I know I'm going to be in a gunfight, I want my rifle. Better yet, I want a SAW.

I like DAO for the loooong trigger pull. In an Oh Crap moment, a light trigger could cause someone to accidentally pull when they otherwise wouldn't have. JMHO
I picked up 2 S&W SW9VE in the past year, prior to December, because they were cheap and came with four 16 round magazines. The trigger was a bit creaky when I got them, but a little work with the polisher got them smooth. Due to the design, the trigger isn't adjustable as far as length. Many people have said bad things about them. However...I've learned that they will fire each and every time the trigger is pulled, making it a great HD handgun. I do have to give them this...S&W got the angle and feelof the grip perfect. 18 degrees and not as wide as the Glock brick, and still has a double stack mag. Aiming is as natural as pointing your finger. Prior to this, I had never owned a DAO, other than a revolver. They really aren't bad for out of the box duty.
