Roller skating

I am watching the three Ohio grandkids, ages five seven and ten or so. .Today we went to the roller rink.

Yikes!

I sat there watching folks careen around out of contol and had to wonder how many people are killed or maimed on roller skates each year.?

Out on the rink the music was deafening....presumably to mask the cries of pain.....

I tried to skate but forgot about my leg length difference and found the shoe too painful and gave it up.
we came home and all three kids collapsed for a nap.

When I was a kid I played street hockey (inline skates) daily. Had quite a few spills but nothing serious. The biggest injury is a broken wrist when you put out your hands in front of you to cushion a fall. They have pads and braces to prevent that injury, if you take the kids there a lot id say maye invest in the wrist guards.

Here's a link...there are a lot of these out there, just an example:

Tom,

Are you sure you're not getting a little over protective?

When I was a kid, the roller rink was one of the few places we had to go for recreation. The skill level varied drastically and learning to skate everyone went butt over teakettle about a dozen times getting plowed over by the "big kids." We ALL survived and no one was maimed.

How we managed to survive all this with no lawyers or politicians involved to
"keep us safe" is quite amazing.

The long and short of it is that kids can take care of themselves if they are allowed to be kids instead of "protected" they will be better adults from the experience.

Enjoy those Grandkids!

Skating was fun (if I recall)...

Dated a woman once who had a passion for it...every date had to include skating in the mix...movies and skating, dinner and skating, clubbing and ALL-NIGHT skating!

I wound up buying my own set of skates after tiring of slipping on those cruddy rentals (yuk!).

Fast forward to my first date with a woman (now my wife), who watched in horror as I was showing off my backward skating moves just as a 4-year old fell in front of me, instantly transforming into a speed bump!

I landed HARD on my tailbone and couldnt walk right for about a month! And that was back when I was relatively young!

Couldn't imagine doing the same now and recovering without inpatient stay!

I don't remember to many people getting hurt on skates when I was a kid.

I do recall those gym scooters being like a battlefield. Plastic seat with handles and 4 casters, usually you'd play a modified soccer or hockey. To move with any speed you had to go backwards and couldn't see where you were going. Lean back to far and you're dumped over, smacking your head on the gym wood. put a hand out and its promptly ran over. It doesn't even give that good of exercise.

Thumbs up

Arggghh! Give me a 12" red rubber ball, 5 paces, a healthy overhand swipe of the arm and a goodly face to which the ball shall rebound off from!!!

Murderball! Combatball! Dodgeball!

A manly sport that whittles one's reactions and enhances one's muscular physique to endevor survival amoungst projectiles physical, to later be able to transfer the obtained skills to be used against endeavors cerebral.

WHEREAS...

Skating is nothing more than an attempt at dancing with one's equalibrium while moving about on wheels!!! Where there are no real losers or winners, just those that can perform a dance that no one remembers long after the disco ball ceases to spin, the pin-lights have been extinguished and the music silenced...

An exercise for the young at heart and a pre-cursuror to all that's to come before one's adult life...

Give the masses...

Dodgeball!!!!!
