Mercedes are not built to be sports cars, its another type of driving experience.

BMW's drive pretty good, when I took that newer 7 series for a spin I fell in love, OMFG that car loves to go!

Having owned a Bimmer I agree that it offers a more exciting driving experience. Lexus on the other hand has a completely uninvigorating experience and feels, sounds and smells cheap. Have you smelled the interior of an aging Lexus. It has a cheap third world aging Toyota taxi plastic scent.

I once used an early LS 400 for vehicle search training. I don't remember it smelling funny. I do remember it was pushing 200,000 miles and still running good, just like the Toyota that it was. The owner was one of my Navy buddies. She may still have it.

I'm still not planning on buying one. Lately I've been starting to think about Porsches, but the only one I really like is the 911/912, and decent examples of those all seem to cost more than I'm willing to spend. 914's can be had for cheap, but they don't really thrill me, and the front engine ones don't do anything for me at all.

You can get a decent Boxster for ~$8500. Far less than a 911/2 in comparable condition.

driving education is such a huge joke
What's really nuts is that a businessman successfully pulled off to the side and yanked the gas pedal out of the mat on the same car the CHP officer and his family died in a few weeks before. I have a feeling the officer was going a bit faster than normal, which is fairly common, and that his family freaking out didn't help things. It's crazy how something like an extra 10mph and having other people in the car can really change the dynamic of the situation.

I talked to the above mentioned Navy buddy today. She sold the Lexus to her brother, who is still driving it.

On the Toyota "Sudden Acceleration" thing. Ok, push in clutch and let the thing bounce off the rev limiter. What? Your Toyota doesn't have a clutch pedal? You are wrong!

My Lexus just rolled over 200K and compared to the Benzes I have owned with that kind of mileage? Well, you really can't compare because I could never trust the odometer on those things! Anyhow, with minimal to no maintenance my Lexus is in awesome shape and I would trust it to drive to NYC and back uneventfully. I certainly would not want to drive an old Benz on a trip like that. It's too darn hot to be sitting on the side of the road waiting for AAA.

My 240D is 29 years old and has around 240,000 miles. I drive it from Maine to DC and back at least once a month and I have never had a breakdown. I've been doing this for three years now. I also drove my 73 220D with 800,000 miles from New York to San Fransisco and back with just one glow plug failure. I have full faith in these older diesels!

And then you can spend another 20k fixing the craptastic engine and transmission.

I routinely drive the 240D from NYC down to rural Virginia to see family -- it's about a 6-700 mi round trip. So far, nothing bad has happened (other than a speeding ticket in NJ, NJ cops lurve cars with NY registration ), and I honestly wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country if it came down to it.
