The Big Man is gone

I was sad to read that Clarence Clemmons died yesterday. Another icon from my youth gone . . .

I don't care aboutpolitics when it comes to music.

The best of both worlds.

Too bad. He was only 69. Here's a good cover of a Jerry Lee Lewis hit.

I didn't realize until I read his obit in the Post that he was from Virginia. I used to marvel at the grief I would feel when someone I didn't even know personally died. Now, I realize that when the people who have had an influence on our lives dies, a little bit of us dies, too.

Yeah, we were on the road saturday night when the station was playing "Born to Run" and when it was over the DJ told us he had passed. I had heard about the stroke the previous weekend and was kinda watching for news. So sad. Great musician. Saw Springsteen and E St band in Cincy in 1980. Great show. Youtube is going be playing Springsteen all day on my pc at work today. This will be one of the cuts:

Was driving to work , late one August night a long time ago. Radio was broadcasting this concert in Cincy from Cleveland Agora. Almost didn't go to work that night. Wanted to just keep driving and enjoying the music.

I loved his wailing sax in Born to Run.

Here's a nice clip of it from the early years, the "Glory Days".

Afraid I wasn't aware of the man behind the amazing sax playing in Springsteen's music - until Darling Wife and I met his nephew Jake Clemons some months ago after a show he'd done, opening for Glen Hansard.

Kid is a tremendous musician - focused mostly on his guitar, he came back during Hansard's performance to play some spectacular sax. Chatting with him after the show, it was obvious that his uncle Clarence had been a huge part of his life, and was a major influence in his music.

Sax (not sex) and rock music doesn't do it for me, not sure what it is. Just doesn't fit.
