Kirby Vacuums

Anyone here ever been suckered into either buying, or selling Kirby Vacuums? The product, though overpriced, is great. The shady sales schemes, and the scams they use to sucker people into selling (Attempting to sell them anyways) is an outrage... Tell your Kirby story here, if you have one... This should be a sticky!!

In college, I once wasted a fine Saturday at a sales employment meeting. Should have just walked out when it started, but I was too nice back then... They do seem like good machines though.

I have two of them. Both were given to me, by one of my brothers. I have to buy some parts for the first one. I have a Heritage and a G3.
This spring there were three of them sitting at the dump. I took them home and cleaned them up. I gave them away. They all worked fairly well.
They were all very grimey. I took the extra accesories that I was missing. One was a G3, one was a G4 and the other an Ultimate. I was about to keep this G3 over mine. It seemed to work a bit better. I kept mine, while I knew it was clean, and the case in a bit better condition. The auto drive was better in this one though.
My mom has boughten a few brand new. Yes, they are expensive.

got two of the ultimate G machines. The one sounds like the bearing is going out on the motor, the other is working fine.
They seem to suck ok. My friend has a dyson however, and I like that vacuum much better. And the best dyson is half the money of the kirby.

My family has had I believe a G5 Kirby since 1995. Bought it new from one of those salesmen. It has never had any problems at all. Just regular bag and belt changes. The only issue I have noticed is that when the "transmission" is in neutral, it makes a clicking sound when pushing it while the motor is off. Otherwise, great product, and it is still very strong don't see it breaking down any time soon!

I have a G3 I got for free, and the full accessory kit I got for free from someone else too.
It works decently, it's a bit of a pain with dog hair since the hair gets wrapped around the spindle and then burns out the belt, but otherwise not a bad machine.
FWIW, Kirby will rebuild your machine to current new specs for a pretty reasonable price.

My parents bought one new in the early 70's. Very expensive.

They got tired of it after a few decades, probably due to the weight, and I took it from them. I used it for another decade or so before giving it away.

I think I want a Dyson, but I'm not sure. We have a cheap something or other which works well enough. It's just a vacuum cleaner.

I have one of the el cheapo Dirt Devil bagged "featherlite" vacuums. They cost like $45....but have plenty of suction. Ours has lasted 2.5 years of use so far, its still 100% functional but makes a weird noise when spinning down. When it dies I'll look for either one of the industrial Eureka vacuums, or a modern hoover canister, those are pretty nice.

I have 3...one is an old Kirby cannister vac. The others are a G3 and a G5. I love both of them.

The old cannister vac was given to me by my grandmother. She bought it back in the mid to late 1950's. Heavy as hell, but works better than anything else I've used. I just had the motor re-wound 2 years ago and the impeller replaced for around $50.

One of the worst things about "modern" vacuums are the stupid bagless ones. They are gross/messy, bagged is so much nicer, the filter is replaced with each bag, it holds more, and its quick and simple to change.

How about a Dyson Toliet?

I have a Kirby. It's a later early 90's model. I love its automatic forward and reverse and it actually lifts the carpet as it sucks.

I have a Kirby Ultimate and a bagless one at the office. That bagless one is newer and used less than the Kirby. Kirby has had 3 drive belts replaced on it and bagless one is on the 3rd one.
