May they rest in peace, Cash For Clunkers Victims
May they rest in peace, mostly decent and serviceable vehicles.
I swear most of these cars look fine to me... I wonder how many Mercedes-Benzs died today... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjBilHH5z2A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gAY1V9yRw8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL6WJx2hEVU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0IcIxhd8ks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE1nXPqoMZo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfeiEwetEkU 1986 300E – I hate this kid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXMWD1wMamI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go29hpq2XuY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3qXvDDhUpE&NR=1 BMW 735i http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPaYVXJRwec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DtsZE7o6_A

an owner of an auto salvage yard was on television today protesting the "Cash for Clunkers" program. he was complaining due to the fact that perfectly good usable parts were being sent to the crusher. the "Cash for Clunkers" program requires that the engine and transmission be filled with a sodium silicate solution so as to destroy the engine and transmission. the used parts dealers are being negatively impacted by this program AND, any good usable parts will not be recycled into use. wonder how many classic or semi-classic mercedes benz automobiles will meet their fate at the hands of the Car Killers?
20. How will the dealer render my trade-in operable? Removing the engine oil from the crankcase, replacing it with a 40 percent solution of sodium silicate (a substance used in similar concentrations in many common vehicle applications, including patching mufflers and radiators), and running the engine for a short period of time at low speeds renders the engine inoperable. Generally, this will require just two quarts of the sodium silicate solution. The retail price for two quarts of this solution (enough to disable the largest engine under the program) is under $7, and the time involved should not substantially exceed that of a typical oil change. It is important to note that there are many varieties of sodium silicates, which are differentiated by weight ratio (the ratio of the silicon dioxide and sodium oxide that make up the compound). The weight ratios range from 1.0 to 3.5, with the higher ratio formulations being less irritating for humans and less corrosive in an engine environment. The material that dealers will be required to use under this rule is at the higher end of the range– 3.2–which means that it is far less of a potential health or environmental issue than other lower range formulations of the product. The agency has decided to implement this process in the rule, requiring a dealer that receives an eligible trade-in vehicle under the CARS program to disable that vehicle’s engine prior to transferring the vehicle to a disposal facility, and to provide a certification to the agency that it has done so at the time the dealer submits its request for reimbursement. I think we should have sent them all to Cuba as a goodwill gesture for denying the country good American cars over the last 4 decades.

But thats the story of a lot of nice older Mercedes. If the currant owners cannot fix them themselves then eventualy everything is broke and its worthless. Since its not worth it or they cannot afford to pay someone else to fix them. Most of those vehicals probably had hundreds of thousands of miles on them and are junk anyway. I oppose the program because its using my tax money to pay for someone elses new car, when I don't have a new car. But I don't mind them taking old junk off the roads.

The cars have to get 18 mpg, I'm like, ok on that. In fact, if one understood the history of the 2.8 Liter engine, one would know that it is the size limit (or was at the time, anyway) of German engines, after which the owner was required to pay heavy gas-guzzler taxes, an idea we as a country should have adopted back in '83 as well, saving the need for us to use our children's lives as the new medium of exchange for oil 20 years later. The 280SL was Mercedes answer to that size limit - they intended to wring the most amount of performance and gas mileage out of the SL using the remarkable 2.8 liter hemi-head design, and they certainly did a good job because I routinely blow the doors off of any US-market designed 380SL.
