I have a mini fridge that, the type that is about 2 ft X 2 ft. The power cord is too short to reach the outlet and it says in the owners manual, not to use an extention cord....why? If I use a 5 ft cord, is that a fire hazard? Is that warning more generic and the hazard applies to bigger fridges that draw more current?

Because many idiot consumers don't know the difference between a lamp extension cord and an appliance extension cord. Rather than try to explain the difference the mfgrs choose to play it safe. Get an appliance extension cord and enjoy a cold one.

...and idiot consumers like to sue manufacturers for damages when incidents occur due to their own lapse of intelligence.

One of my window AC units says the same thing. I bought the heaviest guage 5' appliance cord I could find, I don't remember what size, but I've never had any problem. If the cord even gets slightly warm it's too small.

Stopped to help a motorist jump-start his car one night...when I popped the hood, I noticed that the battery ground strap was non-existent, and the owner had replaced it with a 16-gauge wire!!! Needless to say, the insulation was cooked!

I believe those are the kinds of people the extension cord warnings were directed to...

Just make sure whatever cord you use can handle the amp pull of the fridge. Ignore labels like that, those are lawyer labels.
