Mercedes symbolization?
I decided to write an essay on what an MB means/stands for/symbolizes. I was hoping to get your thoughts on what people think when they see a MB, good or bad. Also any funny stories of reactions or comments about a MB would be cool. Just curious what you guys come up with.

Didn't the 3 pointed star have something to do with German superiority in the air, on land, and at sea?

The three points mean that Mercedes engines power vessels on land, sea, and air

The 3-point star serves as a cross hair for ramping the car in front of you. A very handy, well calibrated tool to rid of those grannies going 45 in the left lane on the freeway.

Engineering excellence.
If you want to know what will be SOP on everyday sedans in the next decade, look at an E-Class today. If you want more than prediction, say an idea, a dream, look at the S-Class. In the S you get to see what the best engineers are toying with for the future. All of those ideas wont become commonplace. All of the other M-B classes are derivative (egg throwing encouraged). At one point, I owned a '88 420SEL and a '88 Coupe deVille.
One had an airbag and antilock brakes. The other had leather seats that had more cracks than dried mud, and the paint was peeling off. It's wheels were steel, and had annoying fake wire wheel covers. The radiator might have been more expensive on the Benz, but the rear discs were a lot cheaper than the old fashioned drums on they Caddy. (yes, both cars needed a new radiator-the Caddy's sides just decided to split, and the Benz's neck broke - no surprise there)

Had a friend from Germany visit a few weeks ago. We climbed into the `Benz one night and as he got in the passenger seat his comment as he pointed to the star on the hood was; "Let the Star lead the way". I smiled and he told me that`s what folks in Deutschland say when they climb aboard a MB. First I heard of that.

My grandfather, who had owned a Citroen (said it was slooow) a Taunus 17m(Badewanne) various Opel (Rekord & Senator) and finally a Audi 80, had always spoken highly of Benz, and usually instructed whoever was listening to look underneath one one day, and see the quality. He longed to get a 123 D someday. About 5 years after he passed away, I bought my first 300D - I think sometimes his spirit goes along for a ride.
If I'm in the E420, I'm thinking he puts on his seatbelt just in case.

A lot to some. Quality, engineering perfection, soul and a few other things. I can honestly say I enjoy riding and driving in any MB, it has never gotten old for me. Nothing like pushing a massive S class to its limits and seeing it do things that cars half its mass cannot. No car is built to be worked on like a MB, they are ment to be fixed simple as that. Working on a Honda by comparison is torture.
The technoligy in the S class for example is 10-20 years ahead of the average family sedan. MB had air suspension in the 60's when American cars had live rear axles. In the 50's MB had fuel injection. MB hasn't used a drum brake in probably 40 years. ABS and SRS were standard starting in 1986, options before then. 97% of the worlds governments own S class's for a reason. Simply put MB has and continues to produce some of the most exciting cars in the world.
