ML 270 CDI Transmission problems

Hi Guys,

Im having auto transmission problems on my 2000mdl ML270 cdi the car has done 100,000 klms.
The engine is free reving when changing from 3rd gear up to 4th gear, And the car has gone into limp home mode (stuck in 2nd gear) a number of times, but if i turn off the engine, wait 1 minute and restart it comes out of limp mode, which surprises me as i thought it should stay in limp mode untill the problem which caused it to go into limp mode has been fixed.
Had it at the service centre and the dianostics test didnt show any codes that they belive would be causing the problem, The trans fluid and level was cheked and OK. They reset the computer and problem still exists.
They said if it keeps doing it they would have to pull apart the trannie to try and find out what is wrong, but I dont want to go down that track yet as to me it sounds more like an electrical problem??

The code's that were on the dianostic check are as follows,

110- no fault text
146- sporadically rpm n3 too high, Externally-toothed disc carrier
147- sporadically gear implausible or transmission slipping
p1189- stored?
c1090- (9f,109020) stored
b1040- can bus stored communication control ETS
b1099- CAN bus- communication control FBM
n1140- can bus
n1242- (ae,12,42,0)
n1243- (ae,12,43,0)
n1241- (ae,12,43,0)

Hoping someone else has had similar problems And may know what is causing the free reving and limp mode.

Thanks,
Scott

ML 270cdi trans problem

Isn't there a service bulletin about trans oil migrating up the trans control wiring cable and causing intermittent shifting problems?

That would seem to be the reason your trans recovers completely sometimes.

Alldata.com has a list of all tsbs for most manufacturers. They charge $14.95/year or you may have a free ride with Autozone if you have the card. My library in Tempe gives free access to ALLDATA and only charges for pages printed.

There may be others and your SA should know about them but it's a lot of reading that they sometimes avoid.

Good luck,

Ml 270 Cdi

I have a ML 270CDI, 2002, 94000KM and a had exacly this problem.
The enter in service mode (2 gear) may be related with a weak batery.
The problem with 3-rd and 4-rd gear when translate is a computer of transmision problem.

5 day a go my car was fixt and naw it is working very nice.

If you need more details please ask.

Thanks Radu,
Was it expensive and what had to be replaced?

Best regards,
Scott
