Painting rims...
Just got my alloy wheels fom vwbuge.
3 are in really good shape, one is slightly bent and will be used for the spare tire. I would like to repaint them. Is there any particular paint I should use? Procedures? I figure to just sand them real good, prime them up sand again and paint. Thanks

I repainted the original rims on your 300SDL with Wurth paint at around 272,000 miles.. I have a photo somewhere if your interested with them on the car freshly painted. I think I used 4 coats of silver and 4 coats of clear. They came out beautifully.
I cleaned them VERY VERY well with soap, water and a brillo pad. I let each coat dry for about 20 minutes. I made a cardboard cutout to mask the tire (if there is a tire on the rim). Paint thinner worked well for any unwated overspray on the tire itself. I painted the lugs as well. |

Joh,
Where do I get Wurth paint? What color would it be? IS there a code or something?

I think I got them at The Benz Bin. You need 1 Silver Metallic and one Laquer Spray. I don't see any numbers on the cans. THey will know what you need.

I looked on their site and there is no mention of spraypaint. I figure if it gets too complicated, any auto body shop should have similar silver colored paint.

I use a big can of Silver and one Clear, from Duplicolor.
Found at Walmart and AutoZone.. One can of each does 8 wheels

I would use the right stuff the first time around. It is specifically used for rims and is just about the factory color which is NOT plain old duplicolor silver. Call the benzbin and ask for the Wurth paint.

Wurth paint not available?
According to the Autopia website, Wurth wheel paint has been on backorder since September 2003 and there's no telling when it will be available. They claim that Einszett German Alloy Silver Wheel Lacquer is the EXACT same paint, made by the same company that makes makes the Wurth paint.
Here's a link to the Autopia page witht Einzett paint: http://store.yahoo.com/autopia/1z970330.html Cheaper than the Wurth too....

Any idea how to remove paint? Mine are painted light gray, the paint job looks real good, but gray? The paint looks like a light version of Volvo outdrive gray!

I repainted my wheels with the exact same procedure as posted by turbodiesel (except no tires on rims). Excellent results. I can't believe it's no longer available. I got mine from pelican parts and even they list it as no longer available.

this stuff is no longer available cause of regulations that came about that wont allow it to be shipped. I think it is because of its toxicty and flame probablity... both often. ! I've ran into this issue with other paint products.
If you have cans of paint in garages check on the label for the flame point. You would be suprised!!! some of it is like way down at 60 deg. Makes it easily explosive.

I am about to refinish the bundts on my SD and because of the problems accessing the Wurth paint I ordered the wheel refinishing kit from Griot's Garage. I've heard and read that it produces excellent results. The instruction sheet that comes with the kit suggests walnut shell or glass bead blasting the wheels before priming/painting/clear coating. If that is too much to consider, I've read that Easy Off oven cleaner and a stiff brush will do a thorough job of cleaning the wheels of old, hardened brake dust. My wheels have lost their gloss entirely and are stained so I am looking forward to refreshing their appearance, and I am also looking forward to reinstalling them with new tires. The previous owner had installed way oversize tires that impart a chunky look but are too wide and make the car feel like it's running on water balloons.

I don't know if it is as good as Wurth, but Griots Garage sells paint for rims.
You can find it on their website: www.griotsgarage.com
